[REVIEW] Aritaum Ginger Sugar Lip Scrub

I never really thought I needed lip scrubs (admit it, you probably never really gave much thought to them too) until I started using matte lipsticks. While some matte lipsticks (like my favourite Shu Uemura) are perfectly comfortable and don’t dry my lips out, others have really sucked the moisture out of my lips and left them looking really flakey (& ugly). I tried to read up online about ways to resolve this – of course I’ve tried using lip balm, but even so I couldn’t completely eliminate all those bits of flakey skin.

I wasn’t ready yet to give up my matte lipsticks, so I had no choice but to try another remedy – lip scrubs.

Di-isostearyl malate, sucrose, microcrystalline wax, mineral oil, dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate/Hexastearate/Hexarosinate, Dipentaerythrityl Tri-Polyhydroxystearate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, jojoba esters, paraffin, silica, polyethylene, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter,Hydrogenated Castor Oil Isostearate, Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Caprylate, tocopheryl acetate, citus auantium bergania (bergamot) fruit oil, Cymbopogon Nardus (Citronella) Oil, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, citrus limon (lemon) peel oil, Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil

This product contains a lot of interesting ingredients that I haven’t commonly seen in other products, such as walnut shell powder, bergamot fruit oil, and of course, ginger root oil. There are also other types of oils (jojoba seed, orange peel, lemon peel, etc.) in this ingredient list, which gives me the impression that this lip scrub contains a cocktail of natural ingredients. It’s great, because these ingredients are likely to be added for their benefits to the lips, or else as a natural fragrance.

Packaging: This is about the same size (or rather, slightly smaller) than the travel size version of LANEIGE’s lip sleeping mask so you know that this product has definitely been optimized for travel purposes. It’s not too messy when you scoop out the product, so I would say it’s pretty hygienic packaging.

Texture: This feels a lot like Vaseline and normal lip balm, although a bit more gooey. It’s not a gross kind of goo, and I like how easily I can spread it across my lips without needing too much product. The tiny bits in the product are also not too rough when you rub them across your lips, so you don’t have to worry about hurting your lips in the process of exfoliation.

I also like how this doesn’t smell and taste strongly of ginger. In fact, I can’t really smell it during application, which is great, because I’m no fan of ginger haha.

Effectiveness: This lip scrub promises to 1) remove dead skin cells, 2) smoothen lips, and 3) keep your lips moisturized. I personally do agree that it delivers on all 3 points, though maybe not so much on the moisturizing part.

I often have this problem of ugly lip flakes when I use matte lipsticks because my lips are always dry, but I noticed that this is no longer a concern after I use Aritaum’s lip scrub. It really works in exfoliating your lips so that you have a smooth canvas to apply lipstick on, and it really looks a lot better these days when I use matte lip products. This definitely encouraged me to use more matte lippies after I resorted to using lip tints and creamier formulas to avoid the flakey lip look.

Final Verdict

If you are a fan of matte lip products, you really can’t skip the step of exfoliation (trust me, it makes a hugeee difference).

This product has been truly a game changer in my makeup routine, and I can now see why it is a popular K-beauty product that has been constantly recommended by websites and magazines. I also highly recommend this for the affordable price tag (as expected from Aritaum), so you can have smooth lips without breaking the bank.

[REVIEW] Aritaum Lip Cover Color Tint

One of the ways brands draw you in to browse cosmetics is through the wide selection of colours and products available. Aritaum is highly successful at this (of course, not only because it boasts of many other AMOREPACIFIC brands), and I became an unfortunate victim of this successful merchandising.

Product description

A long-wearing matte lip tint that offers intense color with full coverage and a matte finish even in hot weather.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: USD 8.63 (Aritaum’s official website)

I got shade #4 Red Papaya, which comes as a surprise because I’m not exactly a fan of bright orange-red shades. My explanation for this is that I didn’t have time to do a proper swatch before I bought it as I was rushing for time, so I just trusted the colour band on the white cap. When I finally got around to using it, I got a shock of my life at how bright the red colour was.

I think the applicator is a tad messy (Urban Decay’s Vice Liquid Lipstick is quite clean in comparison), so you have to be very careful when using this or you might stain your fingers and clothes.

As you can see from the swatch, it’s a bright red (actually resembles chili sauce haha) that stains very well. I don’t think the colour matched my skin very well, but I was actually quite surprised by how good my lips looked in photographs after I applied this lip tint. The colour is very vibrant and really stands out, unlike my other lip products which don’t quite show up as well in photographs.

In addition, although this product is technically a tint, it actually dries matte like a liquid lipstick. It’s a comfortable matte that does not dry your lips out. What’s also commendable is its staying power – definitely capable of lasting a few hours with meals and drinks. The bright colour will, of course, look more muted over time, but there is still sufficient colour coverage.

Final Verdict

If I apply this fully on my lips, it doesn’t look quite as good on me because of my skin tones. However, a gradient lip works pretty nicely.

I’ve been rather impressed by Aritaum’s lip products so far, which is a relief because I wasn’t familiar with the brand when I made my purchases. I’m sold by the formula and colour payoff, so I’m definitely putting this on my repurchase list. I’m looking to buy #3 and #12, as I gravitate towards more peachy and pink shades. I still don’t think I’m fully capable of pulling off such a bright red as of yet, haha.

It’s a pity, however, that they don’t have brown-red shades which are very in-season these days, but maybe they will add more in future? 😇

[REVIEW] Aritaum Wonder Stay Stick Tint

If you’ve been to Korea, you might have seen Aritaum stores in almost every district you went. Aritaum is AMOREPACIFIC’s store for selling products from their brands (e.g. Mamonde, LANEIGE), but besides that, Aritaum is also its own brand! I would say that Aritaum offers more affordably-priced products, on about the same level as Etude House and Innisfree, as compared to higher-end brands like Sulhwasoo and IOPE.

Product description

Highly pigmented long-lasting lip tint stick.

Don’t all the colours look gorgeous? I think it’s a tad limited, but the ones available are exactly the ones I would pick anyway haha. I bought the shade #11 Pink Cinnamon. I’m no fan of cinnamon to be honest, but thankfully this lip tint didn’t taste anything like it.

This may be a lip tint, but it’s not quite the same as the other lip tints I’ve introduced, such as the Innisfree Eco flower Tint. It applies and feels more like a gloss, but is way more pigmented and long-lasting.

Pink Cinnamon is a really beautiful dusty rose, though I have no idea why it’s called Pink Cinnamon. The colour payoff is really high for a lip tint – all it takes is one swipe for sufficient colour. It also feels comfortable on my lips, and not uncomfortably sticky as some glosses tend to be.

The staying power is not as fantastic as I would like it to be, coming from a tint. The product description promises that it will be long-lasting, but it didn’t last me through a pizza party. Sometimes, I still have remnants of lipstick left when I clean my lips with makeup removal at the end of the day, but there was none left at all with this product.

Final Verdict

I love how comfortable and good this lip tint looks. It doesn’t look quite as creamy as the official photo may promise to be, but the colour payoff is definitely capable of achieving the same result.

I think its price is pretty agreeable, and it was actually way cheaper when I bought it in Korea because of a 1+1 sale. I haven’t tried to buy Aritaum in Singapore, but if you’re in Korea, I would definitely recommend buying this if you happen to visit an Aritaum store (chances of that happening are pretty high anyway).

The only issue I have with this product is the fact that it’s not as long-lasting as expected. I can get really lazy about reapplying my makeup, and even more so if I have to do it every time I eat and drink (which happens to be pretty often, sadly). I think this would be nice to wear if you’re out for a short meeting or photoshoot, but not for, say, an important meal appointment.
