[REVIEW] MOART Velvet Lipstick

I always find out about new Korean brands on Instagram (thumbs up to the brands that are doing a good job on Insta, you’re really enticing consumers like me :’)) and I saw this in my Explore page, I think. I’m always a sucker for lipsticks and MLBB shades, and I honestly liked their packaging, so I got interested in this new brand that recently launched in Singapore.

What was initially just interest eventually led to a purchase one day when I went to swatch the products for myself…

Ingredient List

Couldn’t find this, sorry about it!

I took very long to decide on a shade (what’s new though) and eventually picked R2 Cotton Rose. It’s a soft pink that I think would work great for both warm and cool undertones, making it a very versatile colour.

Packaging: It’s nothing fancy, but I do appreciate a change once in a while from the cute packaging found on almost all K-beauty products. This kind of reminds me of the toy blocks we used to play as a kid? Actually, it does look a bit like someone took a block of wood and painted the bottom to show the lipstick shade. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining that it’s ugly, but rather a different K-beauty packaging compared to those I am used to.

Colour: I absolutely love this shade!! I still haven’t found a shade that I think is exactly the perfect MLBB colour I want, but this comes really close. It immediately enhances your lip colour if you apply one thin layer on your lips, and takes just a few swipes for a full lip look. The payoff is pretty good, and the colour slides off easily so you don’t have to tug hard for it to appear.

I am a little concerned, however, that the lipstick gives off a faint crayon smell. I’ve smelled that before on a few other lipsticks, which probably expired. I’ve checked my lipstick and it expires in 2021, so I have no idea what is up with this strange waxy smell.

Staying power: As a velvet lipstick, I don’t really expect amazing staying power. I do feel that this lipstick applies more matte than cream, but thankfully doesn’t dry lips out so much as matte products do. Don’t expect the full colour to stay on after a meal, most likely what’s left is just a bit of a ‘tint’. Be prepared, cos you’ll definitely have to touch up on your lipstick after every meal.

Final Verdict

I’m generally feeling quite okay about this lipstick – good, but not super amazing. I obviously love their shades because they are all so wearable, but one thing that bugs me is the smell of wax. I don’t know if it’s a common problem, but I do wish that MOART could do something about it. This can be a turnoff for consumers who are very sensitive to scent and particular about using something that could potentially be a chemical irritant.

Have any of you experienced this weird crayon smell before? Let me know!

Another thing: I feel that SGD20 is a little expensive for a lipstick that doesn’t really boast about its benefits or unique selling points. Other K-beauty brands sell cheaper than that, and with equally good, if not better product quality.

Overall, this is a product that I think it’s safe to try (unlikely to regret purchasing), but not a must-have. Now, if only this it were cheaper and smelt nicer (roses?)…
