[REVIEW] Colourpop Crème Gel Liner

If I had to rank my preference for eyeliner types, pencil eyeliners would definitely top the list. No matter how much I practice, I still struggle a little with getting liquid and gel liners to work for me, so those are definitely not my go-to products when I’m rushing for time.

Product Description

Crème Gel Liner Colour glides on smoothly for comfortable application in the waterline. Creamy formula makes blending super easy and formula dries down for long-lasting wear.

Ingredient List

DIMETHICONE, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, CERESIN, POLYETHYLENE, SILICA, STEAROXY DIMETHICONE, COPPER POWDER (CI 77400), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), MICA (CI 77019), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891).

The top ingredient, Dimethicone, is a type of silicon that ‘helps create improved texture in skincare, helping products to glide across the skin’.

According to Vogue UK,

There is some debate about whether dimethicone and other silicones can clog pores and worsen acne-prone skin.

It may sound like a serious cause for concern, but I have yet to experience any discomfort despite having sensitive and acne-prone skin. It might be because my eyelids are not as easily affected, or the area in contact is small, but generally, this chemical should not worry you too much.

I love using shimmery brown eyeliners because they add a layer of depth to the eyes without overly emphasizing them.

Packaging: I like how it is simple, clean and light. The only issue I can find with this is that it’s white, which makes it prone to getting dirtied by the eyeliner pigment itself.

Colour payoff & intensity: I was initially a bit worried that the brown would be too light and not show up very well on my skin, but this turned out a lot better than I expected. It applies pretty smoothly and shows up as a mocha-chocolate colour. The colour payoff is good, and the shade itself is not too intense either, which is great for a more natural look.

Staying power: While generally waterproof, this has not been as smudge-proof as I had hoped. I can usually tell if it is smudge-proof based on whether there are traces of my eyeliner on my lower eyelid. My eyelids are always very oily, no matter how much primer and setting powder I use, so if I use an eyeliner that’s not smudge-proof, it’ll definitely smudge a little onto my lower eyelid, and that’s precisely what happened with this product. If you have oily skin and especially oily eyelids, you might need to take extra precaution with this one.

Final Verdict

This product is definitely value for money, at just USD 5.

While my fear of getting it smudged onto my lower eyelids has stopped me from making this my holy grail pencil eyeliner, I would say that everything else about this product is fantastic. I love the colour and smooth application and honestly would consider buying other shades (especially the white one for my waterline) in future.

[REVIEW] Colourpop Ultra Blotted Liquid Lipstick

Colourpop is one of those brands I’ve seen almost everyone around me gushing about for its price and quality, so when friend A asked if I wanted to buy something in order to make a big enough order for free international delivery, I leaped at the chance.

After much scrolling of the website and reading of reviews by fellow bloggers, I whittled down my purchase to 3 products, and I’ll first review my favourite item, the Ultra Blotted Liquid Lipstick.

Product Description

For that soft, diffused just-blotted look, our medium coverage liquid lipstick dries matte, doesn’t budge, and feels soft and comfy on the lips.

Ingredient List

ISODODECANE, OCTYLDODECANOL, METHYL METHACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, DIISOSTEARYL MALATE, SILICA, POLYPROPYLSILSESQUIOXANE, DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, C30-45 ALKYL CETEARYL DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, PROPYLENE CARBONATE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA BUTTER), TOCOPHEROL, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, PERSEA GRATISSIMA (AVOCADO) OIL, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL, TRIBEHENIN, SORBITAN ISOSTEARATE, PALMITOYL TRIPEPTIDE-1, IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77499), RED 7 LAKE (CI 15850), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891).

Isododecane? Sounds a tad fishy, but a quick check on Paula’s Choice will tell you that ingredient is safe and common.

Synthetic hydrocarbon ingredient used as a solvent. Isododecane enhances the spreadability of products and has a weightless feel on skin. All hydrocarbons used in cosmetics help prevent the evaporation of water from skin.

Among its many uses in beauty products, it’s not uncommon to see isododecane in long-wear lipsticks and foundations, where it helps minimize color transfer and lends itself to a lightweight, matte finish.

Again, most of the other ingredients listed are labeled as good on Paula’s Choice, so you may not need to worry as much about using this if you have sensitive skin.

If you’ve looked at all the shades available for this product, you’ll definitely understand how difficult it is to choose just one colour. Of course I wish I could have them all, but reality is cruel 😢

Packaging: It immediately reminded me of Urban Decay’s Vice Liquid Lipstick, except with a thinner bottle. Having said that, I would say that it’s quite a common packaging for liquid lipsticks, so little surprise there on the resemblance. It’s generally quite well-made and doesn’t look too cheap.

Colour: Colourpop describes this as a warm rose, which is a very fitting description. The hand swatch looks a tad too red, so it’s better to refer to the applicator itself to see the true colour. It’s definitely an MLBB shade that is easily incorporated into any makeup look.

Colour payoff & intensity: The colour is not super intense, as a matte lipstick might be, because it’s marketed as a blotting lippie. However, the colour payoff and intensity are definitely more than sufficient in covering your lips fully.

Texture: Despite being labelled as a ‘blotting lipstick’, which initially gave me this mental image of lip tints rather than liquid lipsticks, this is actually much closer to a matte liquid lipstick. In fact, this definitely reminded me of Peripera’s Airy Ink Velvet! The textures are very similar, with the velvety and airy feel on application. I dare say it can even be a dupe for Peripera (or is it the other way round? hmm)

I also like that it’s not drying – of course, it’s inevitable that at some point in time your lips will feel a little dry, but definitely nothing too uncomfortable.

Staying power: As with most liquid lipsticks, you should expect a decent level of staying power. While not totally transfer-proof, I do think this product stays on quite well through all the eating and drinking, and you should still have a fair amount of product left after a few hours.

Final Verdict

Friend A told me more than once that she loves this, and I absolutely agree.

Most of the time, I stick to lip tints rather than liquid lipsticks, because these liquid products are not always the easiest to work with, despite all their claims of being less drying on the lips, transfer-proof, etc.

This blotted liquid lipstick, however, is truly a life-changer in my make-up collection, and is slowly making its way to my list of most frequently used lipsticks. Feels comfortable on the lips, stays well, makes your lips look healthy – it feels like too much to expect from an extremely affordable liquid lipstick, but Colourpop has overturned my assumptions and managed to deliver in all aspects.

Am I repurchasing this in the future? DEFINITELY. I even already have a few other shades in my bag, waiting for me to check them out on one fine day…
