Spraying on hand

I like the beautiful pink and floral packaging, it makes it very obvious that it’s a feminine scent that has floral (particularly rose) notes. I hope Althea creates a travel size version of it soon, because this is something that I would want to bring around but the current bottle feels a little too bulky for me.

Fragrance-wise, I am quite a fan of floral and fruity notes, making this a mist that I really do enjoy smelling. It’s not sickly sweet, and definitely not the kind of artificial, sharp smell that you get from cheap perfumes (you can almost imagine that smell in your nose, right?)

I also find that this fragrance lasts for very long: I once sprayed it in the morning, and found the smell lingering on for the rest of the day even after I’ve showered – not a bad thing, since I love the smell!

Final Verdict

Some brow-raising ingredients aside, I have to say that this body mist is something I would spray daily because it smells so refreshing and lovely, it does put me in quite a good mood.

I think SGD11.60 is a fair price to pay for 100ML of product, though it is a pity that you can’t have a whiff of this scent before you buy online from Althea. Maybe Althea should send sample atomizers with every order? IDK, just a suggestion!

[REVIEW] Althea Milk Peel Cream Mask

I received this product from Althea, thank you for sending this over! I actually wanted to try a new exfoliation mask for some time but never got around to doing it, but Althea seems to have read my mind HAHA. Read on for my review!

Product Description

Give your skin a big gulp of hydration with the refreshing peeling powers of Althea’s Milk Peel Cream Mask! Containing both AHA and BHA extracts, this gentle but effective exfoliator transforms from a clay to a whipped cream lather, whisking away dead skin cells to prevent flakiness. It’s also formulated with casein protein from milk to revitalize and moisturize the skin. The result is radiantly smooth, healthy skin that’s bouncy to the touch!

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 12.50 (Althea)

Water (Aqua), Kaolin, Glycerin, Disiloxane, Bentonite, Propanediol, Myristic Acid, Methyl Perfluoroisobutyl Ether, Stearicacid, Methyl Perfluorobutyl Ether, Potassium Hydroxide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Palmitic Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Milk Proteinextract, Disodium Edta, Gaultheria Procumbens (Wintergreen) Leaf Extract, Gluconolactone, Glycolic Acid, Titaniumdioxide (Ci 77891), Fragrance (Parfum), Coumarin*, Hexyl Cinnamal*, Citronellol*

Packaging: What I love most about this packaging is that it comes with a hygienic pump, so I can pump out an appropriate amount of product as required without creating a mess.

Texture: I was quite amazed by the fact that this clay mask actually foams into lather even though it comes out in a clay-like texture. I’ve never seen a product like this before, and honestly it makes it even easier to apply on the face. After all, clay can be a little hard to apply because it can be rather thick and less viscous. The lather feels very comfortable on my skin, and doesn’t feel at all like my skin is getting clogged up, which is something I’ve experienced before (slightly) with some clay masks.

Effectiveness: It certainly does this job well as an exfoliation mask. After following recommended directions and rinsing the mask off after about 1 minute, I can immediately feel the difference it made on my skin. It definitely became softer & cleaner, and only a slight bit tight.

If you feel that your skin has become taut after using an exfoliating product, it is not always a good thing as it could mean that your skin is dry, hence the tight feeling. A slightly tight feeling could mean that your pores are cleaned without being forcibly opened – large pores mean you can get more junk clogged there in future!

Final Verdict

I honestly think this is such a steal at just SGD12.50 for an innovative and effective peeling mask. It’s great for most skin types, and also good to use even if you have sensitive skin.

However, be careful not to overuse this mask! As with all exfoliating products, you shouldn’t be using this everyday, or even the gentlest products can really strip your skin of all moisture. I recommend using it once a week, but if your skin is really very sensitive, you can consider using this every fortnight.

[REVIEW] Althea Petal Velvet Sunaway

I received this new product from Althea about one or two months ago. It was really timely, considering that I had just started applying sunscreen more frequently (yes, I know, I’m not exactly a role model).

Product Description

Shield your skin from the sun’s rays and give it some petal protection with Althea’s Petal Velvet Sunaway! Ultra lightweight, this invisible sunscreen is formulated with hyaluronic acid and Damask rose extracts, ensuring that your skin stays fresh and hydrated throughout the day without any streakiness or a white cast. It has an SPF of 50+ and PA++++, so your skin’ll be kept protected all day. As part of the Petal Velvet line, it also contains micro-powder particles that give you a smooth, petal-like complexion.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 13

NOTICE: Do take note that hyaluronic acid is actually not included in the ingredients, this is a mistake on Althea’s part!

Ingredient List

WATER, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, ZINC OXIDE, DISILOXANE, PROPANEDIOL, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, DICAPRYLYL ETHER, METHYL METHACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS FLOWER OIL, SALVIA OFFICINALIS (SAGE) OIL, POGOSTEMON CABLIN OIL, CITRUS AURANTIUM BERGAMIA (BERGAMOT) FRUIT OIL, ROSA DAMASCENA FLOWER EXTRACT, PEG-10 DIMETHICONE, STEARIC ACID, ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE, VINYL DIMETHICONE/METHICONE SILSESQUIOXANE CROSSPOLYMER, SODIUM CHLORIDE, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, SORBITAN CAPRYLATE, GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE, POLYGLYCERYL-6 POLYRICINOLEATE, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, ETHYL HEXANEDIOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL

Interesting ingredients here include the various types of oils and extracts, as promised in the product description. For those who have sensitive skin, take note that Cyclopentasiloxane and Butlyene Glycol are potential irritants!

Althea Petal Velvet Sunaway 4.jpg

Packaging: It looks quite standard, common across most types of sunscreen I’ve seen so far. I do like the colours though – pink is such an Althea colour, and definitely strengthens the concept of using Damask rose extracts.

Texture: Seeing that water is the top ingredient, it comes as little surprise that this is so watery. I think this may be even more watery than my Bioré one, even though this sunscreen from Althea doesn’t really emphasize this part, other than the mention about it being ultra lightweight.

I am absolutely in favour of such textures, because it is well-absorbed by skin and is less likely to clog pores. I really dislike the feeling of having my skincare products settle on top of my skin – so gross!

Effectiveness: It’s tough to check whether this product is really fending off the harmful sun rays for me, but I’ll evaluate this based on its product claims:

Ensuring that your skin stays fresh and hydrated throughout the day: I didn’t really feel so much of this freshness and hydration on my skin, but I’m not sure if it’s because my skin is already very oily to begin with and putting on more oils just feels oilier to me.

Without any streakiness or a white cast: I totally agree with this. In the last photo above, you’ll see that even though I’ve patted in the sunscreen and spread it out a little, you don’t really see a white cast or oily streaks on my skin. It’s great because some sunscreens tend to leave you looking multiple shades lighter than you actually are, which looks very weird. All I’m asking for in my sunscreen is sun protection, not whitening please.

Smooth, petal-like complexionMy skin hasn’t been anywhere near smooth for some time because I keep having all these tiny bumps here and there (if I’m lucky). I don’t think this product helps in smoothening skin, but I don’t know if it’s just because my skin has been looking so bad that no amount of this sunscreen can do anything for me. Maybe if your skin is better, you can see this smoothening effect better.

Final Verdict

I’m a huge advocate of using sunscreens, but I think I might give this a pass for personal reasons.

Firstly, I’m not a big fan of the smell. Granted, you can’t find ‘artificial’ fragrances in the ingredient list, but the smell can still be very overwhelming. I think it’s the smell of the rose extract, or perhaps some other oil, that is responsible for this. It’s a very sharp smell that I don’t really like, and some people may be uncomfortable with it as well.

Next, I got a minor breakout from using this. I’m suspecting it may be the irritants, or that my oily skin just doesn’t enjoy being further overwhelmed by more oils. I don’t think I’ve read other reviewers complaining about this, so it’s most likely just me.

However, if you have more balanced and ‘resistant’ skin, and absolutely love herbal smells, you can consider giving this a shot. At SGD 13, I think it is fairly reasonable, making it a good entry product for those who are new to doing UV protection.

Packaging: I like this squeeze tub packaging better than a tub that I have to scoop out of, because it’s definitely a lot more convenient and hygienic. It’s also very easy to squeeze an appropriate amount on my fingers. I can see that it’ll potentially be very good to bring in your luggage when you’re travelling, although it’s always good to have a smaller, travel-sized version (Althea, please? :D)

Texture: My first thought when I tried this was that it’s a little gooey, and has a gel-like consistency. It’s a bit different from the cleansers I normally use, but it didn’t feel uncomfortably thick or anything. In fact, you won’t really feel like your face is getting clogged or anything, partly due to the fact that you only need to leave this on your face for 10 seconds!

Effectiveness: If I had to pick favourites, I would probably choose the Green Tea version. According to the description, the Rose one is supposed to refine your skin (read: exfoliate?), and the Green Tea one to soothe and nourish. I personally prefer using products that are gentler on the skin, because my skin is as sensitive as I am  and using anything too harsh will cause my skin to go into redness overdrive. I definitely do agree that using the Rose one has caused my skin to feel a little tight and dry sometimes, but the Green Tea one has always left my face feeling refreshed, which I really like

I don’t think the effects are super ‘wow’, but they definitely do good stuff for your skin.

Final Verdict

At SGD 25, I think it’s a little pricey for a cleanser, but I can see why they priced it so when you see how many great ingredients they formulated this with.

If you have sensitive skin, I definitely recommend that you try using the Green Tea Detoxer first (though I have to admit that I love the Rose one because it’s so pretty haha).
