[REVIEW] LANEIGE BB Cushion (Pore Control)

This is my first ever LANEIGE cushion – I got really addicted to using my IOPE one, so I didn’t really get around to using this often. I started trying this when my first IOPE refill was running out, so here I am with my LANEIGE cushion review!

Ingredient List

WATER / AQUA / EAU, ZINC OXIDE (NANO), CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE, METHYL TRIMETHICONE, DICAPRYLYL CARBONATE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (NANO), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), CETYL PEG/PPG-10/1 DIMETHICONE, POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, CYCLOHEXASILOXANE, NIACINAMIDE, NYLON-12, HDI/TRIMETHYLOL HEXYLLACTONE CROSSPOLYMER, LAURYL PEG-9 POLYDIMETHYLSILOXYETHYL DIMETHICONE, ACRYLATES/ETHYLHEXYL ACRYLATE/DIMETHICONE METHACRYLATE COPOLYMER, IRON OXIDES (CI 77492), ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, FRAGRANCE / PARFUM, STEARIC ACID, DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, DIMETHICONE, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, PHENOXYETHANOL, IRON OXIDES (CI 77491), DIMETHICONE/VINYL DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, ACRYLATES/STEARYL ACRYLATE/DIMETHICONE METHACRYLATE COPOLYMER, IRON OXIDES (CI 77499), TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, DISODIUM EDTA, SILICA, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, METHYL METHACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, MENTHA PIPERITA (PEPPERMINT) EXTRACT, PINUS SYLVESTRIS LEAF EXTRACT, HYDROLYZED CORN STARCH, POLYPROPYLSILSESQUIOXANE, CHENOPODIUM QUINOA SEED EXTRACT, PENTYLENE GLYCOL, MAGNESIUM SULFATE, CALCIUM CHLORIDE, MANGANESE SULFATE, ZINC SULFATE, ASCORBYL GLUCOSIDE

Some key ingredients:

  • Sodium chloride: Softening for skin when used in moderation, potential irritant
  • Butylene glycol: potential irritant
  • Fragrance: potential irritant
  • Peppermint extract: Revitalize skin
  • Pinus sylvestris leaf extract: Antioxidant
  • Zinc oxide: sun protection

I think the first thing that hit me when I first used this product was the strong metal smell – anyone experienced the same thing too?

Packaging: It resembles IOPE’s (no duh, same parent company), but this feels bulkier and not quite as… compact? I do agree the iridescent lid is pretty, but when I compare it to others of a similar price, I feel like it just doesn’t fare as well in this aspect.

Colour: 21 is my normal go-to shade, but I feel like this one is a tad too fair for me. Also, what is up with the marketing material that labels this shade ‘normal Asian’s skin’? Not very nice to label other darker/fairer skin shades as abnormal leh. Also, why is 23 considered ‘tanned’??

Staying power: This product is supposed to keep your skin feeling fresh all long day, but I honestly didn’t feel like this worked as I expected it to. I saw the BB cream start to oxidize after a few hours, and this process accelerated when I was out in the hot sun.

Coverage: As with most cushions, you shouldn’t expect this to cover all your bumps and acne scarring. I have to say though, my blemishes looked even worse when I was in a dry air-conditioned room, like my pores were all enlarged, dry, and my skin SO OILY!

Final Verdict

I know this cushion won quite a number of awards but no, this really didn’t work out that well for me.

Of course, this BB cushion is not without its merits. I do appreciate the brightening effect that most BB creams provide, but other than that, I can’t say I’m a fan of this. I think I’ll stick to my IOPE cushion instead.

[REVIEW] LANEIGE Ultra Long-lasting Eyeliner

After my Colourpop eyeliner died on me (aka a whole chunk of the lead just broke off and I was left with a stump I could barely use), I had to find another pencil eyeliner as a backup, just in case my TFS one died the same way too.

Product Description

Long-lasting eyeliner with the compound function of  all day long smudge-free strong waterproof and sweatproof

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 29.00

Ingredient List

Iron Oxide, Carmine, Titanium Dioxide, Ferric Ferrocyanide, Mica, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Synthetic Wax, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14Olefin), Hydrogenated Polydecene, Polybutene, Silica Silylate, Rhus succedanea Fruit Wax., Ethylene/Propylene Copolymer, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-d-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Carnauba Wax

According to this source, Hydrogenated Polydecene is persistent or bioaccumulative and moderate to high toxicity concern in humans. It sounds quite disturbing, but apparently the overall hazard is actually low so it should pose a high risk to humans.

My initial choice was actually Light Brown because I wanted to try a lighter shade to brighten my eyes, but the LANEIGE store I went to ran out of stock for it, so I opted to get it in Dark Brown instead.

Packaging: A simple pencil, as with most pencil liners. It’s light and convenient to carry around in your makeup pouch. What I do particularly like is that it looks quite luxurious.

Colour payoff & intensity: I thought no other pencil eyeliner could beat Colourpop’s payoff. I was WRONG. This eyeliner is so good that I just need to draw a line once and it’s intense enough (see swatch photo above). You won’t need to keep drawing the same line over and over again, or risk tugging at your eyelids to get the perfect colour.

Staying power: By now we know that not all claims are necessarily true, and so I was a bit skeptical when I saw that this eyeliner claimed to be waterproof, sweatproof, and able to hold up the entire day. I was proven wrong when I had this one for a super long day – I woke up at 5.30AM, rushed through some work preparations in the afternoon, helped out at an event until about 10PM, and reached home at about 10.45PM. I was prepared to have most of my makeup gone by then – my foundation had partly oxidized, my lipstick was gone, but my eyeliner was still intact! COMPLETELY intact! My eyelids were definitely oily and I obviously perspired quite a lot in the day, but my eyeliner had not budged at all!

Final Verdict

I never thought that I would spend so much money on an eyeliner, and I was really worried that this was going to be one of those ‘meh’ purchases that made me regret being so experimental, but I’m so happy that I tried this because it’s so good!!

The only thing that made me feel a bit ‘meh’ when I was using this was that just like the Colourpop eyeliner, the lead is really soft so it breaks off super easily. I once accidentally broke off a chunk when I was being too rough, and I could hear my heart break because this was really quite pricey. You might have to be prepared to have your heart broken once in a while when you use this product.

Beauty Products I Won’t Repurchase

In an ideal world, we would love every beauty product because everything works and  everything is affordable. Unfortunately, things are not quite so rosy in real life. This is the first post on items I won’t be repurchasing – let’s hope that I won’t have to do too many of such posts :X

RiRe Luxe Glow Lipstick

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was just… simply put, not what I was looking for. The colour was way too purple for my liking. I know, it’s fuchsia pink (I just realized they didn’t even spell this correctly on their marketing materials, oh man), but surely the colour should look much closer to pink like in the promotional photos? It also doesn’t help that the packaging looks cheap, the product smells like plasticky wax, and my lips had an allergic reaction to it. Yeah. Just don’t buy this, I really don’t think it’s worth the money.

Colourpop Crème Gel Liner

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I initially gave this product a glowing review but after I kept having huge chunks of the lead breaking off, I have changed my mind. I know this is really very affordable and the application is really smooth, but it breaks my heart whenever this breaks off. I swore I had half of the lead break off, so I had to go buy a new eyeliner much earlier than I expected. I’m never repurchasing this again to save myself the heartache.

TFS Signature Highlighter

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This just didn’t work for me. I don’t know why. Maybe you need to be very fair for the glow and colours to be seen. All I know is that I can’t see much on my skin, so I’m giving this a pass.

LANEIGE Water Sleeping Mask

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I really wanted to love this product because it feels and smells so good, but my skin has not been reacting well to it 😦 I won’t be buying this again, but it’s a personal skin issue rather than a product deficiency. This might work better for you if your skin is normal/dry, and not so sensitive.

Etude House Any Cushion All Day Perfect

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Having tried other fantastic cushion compacts, I’m sorry to say that this really falls short. Coverage is minimal, staying power not as great as advertised, and leaves your skin looking patchy and cakey. It’s a definite no from me.

[WISHLIST] Jul 2018

Almost everyday, a brand releases a product or collaboration that is sure to tempt you into buying, even if you already have a ton of unused products on your vanity table. That’s how I feel every time I scroll Instagram, so I wanted to share some products that’s been on my wishlist for some time!

Etude House Play Color Eyes #Peach Farm

I have two of Etude House’s Play Color Eyes Palettes (Juice Bar and Cherry Blossom), and while I am frankly not a big fan of the colour payoff, I seriously love the colours in this palette. It looks a lot like Too Faced’s, but retails at a much lower price point. I was really excited when I saw this being released in Korea, but it’s still not available in local Etude House stores. I don’t know why Etude House Singapore doesn’t want to stock this, because I’ve heard from friends that they would love to buy this as well. Oh well. I’m looking to buy this in Korea, or else order online from Shopee.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup

I recall first seeing this in as a PPL in Korean drama Temperature of Love, and then I really got interested in purchasing this after switching from BB creams to foundations. I actually haven’t had much problems with my current foundations (alternating between Lancome and Innisfree) but they do oxidize after a long period of time. I really want something that can last longer without me touching up with BB cushions, because I tend to spend long days outside in hot, sweltering weather.

I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews about this – any reader would like to say more about this? The only thing really stopping me from trying this foundation is its price, so I’m really considering investing in this foundation if enough people can convince me 😂

LANEIGE Water Bank Quick Hydro Pen

I’m interested in buying this more for the novelty, if anything. How cute is it to carry a pen around and scribble on your face when you need hydration?! I actually tried the tester at a local LANEIGE store – while it did feel hydrating on the areas I applied, my only question is when I might need to use it. Maybe this will come in handy when you’re living in a place with really dry weather, and your skin is cracking? The applicator is a bit small and looks more like a brush than a pen, but it’s still a very fun product concept that I want to use someday.

3CE Tattoo Lip Color

The colours are so gorgeous that I would want to bag every single shade here. Don’t they make the lips look really juicy and sweet? Okay, that did not sound quite right, but you get my point. I’ve been using MLBB shades so often these days that I’ve almost forgotten how fun it is to use popping shades like these. I think they might sell this in Sephora, but I have to check. My favourites have to be #Candy Jelly and #Yay or Nay – what’s yours?

Canmake Glow Fleur Cheeks

Friend A said she bought this and it looked really good on her, and personally, I find these blushes so pretty that I’m surprised I have resisted buying this for so long. I’ve tested some shades of this at my local pharmacy and I’m really impressed by the colour. It gives your cheeks a natural, healthy glow that you can sport even if you’re actually dying on the inside, so I’m putting this in my shopping cart and waiting for a good day to check this out.

[REVIEW] LANEIGE Water Bank Gel Cream

After my gruelling, heart-wrenching (okay, I kid) experience with LANEIGE’s Water Sleeping Mask, and fuelled by an urgency to stock up on my deplenishing moisturizer, I headed to LANEIGE to see if I could find something good. I’m still pretty bought over by their marketing (yes, I know) and I really wanted to see if there was something suitable for me.

If you have read my review of LANEIGE’s Water Sleeping Mask, you might remember Butylene Glycol. Here’s what I wrote previously about this ingredient:

A quick check online states that “in sensitive individuals, butylene glycol may be irritating to the skin, eyes, and or nasal passages, but it is the least potentially irritating of all the glycols”. Oh dear.

Oh dear indeed, because I bought this moisturizer without realizing that it contained this ingredient.

A quick check on other ingredients:

CHAMAECYPARIS OBTUSA WATER: Apparently has antioxidant activity and delayed aging effects.

LIMNANTHES ALBA (MEADOWFOAM) SEED OIL: Boasts superb anti-oxidant properties and skin softening benefits.

CETEARYL ALCOHOL: Fatty alcohols like cetearyl alcohol do not pose a risk of sensitizing skin. Woohoo!

Packaging: I’m a huge fan of LANEIGE’s packaging, but this honestly takes the cake. Blue reflective glass makes for a slightly heavier-than-usual tub, but it looks and feels so classy that I would forgive the extra weight. It’s very easy to open and close, no special contraption or anything. My only gripe is that it’s not the most convenient (or lightest) item you’d want to carry around, especially if you’re planning to pack this for travels. They might have a travel-sized version of this, but I’m not too sure.

Texture: I’ve sung so many praises about Belif’s water-like, aqueous moisturizers because they get absorbed so easily by my oily skin. My skin absolutely hates oily and heavy moisturizing creams, but it’s been a pretty tough journey to find a moisturizer that’s not too much for my skin to handle. This LANEIGE gel cream though, is next to perfection. When I tested this out at the store, I knew this was it. The absorption by my skin was instant, and I felt this nice cooling sensation on my skin. This is absolutely wonderful for all the folks with oily/combination skin because it does not clog pores at all. Not a single bit.

Effectiveness: This moisturizer from LANEIGE promises 24 hours of hydration for your skin. While I’m not really sure how true this is (it’s tough when your skin is often more oily than dry), I do see that my skin looks much better in the morning after I apply moisturizer the night before. It definitely feels more supple and refreshed, and a lot less oily as well. I’ve had no breakouts with this – in fact, I even had someone remark to me recently that my skin looked dewy!

Final Verdict

SGD52 makes this product really pricey. It’s by far the most expensive product I have invested in, but I’m happy to say that it has been proven to be worth every cent.

Although I have had no problems using this on sensitive, acne-prone skin, I do recommend testing this out in-store first before you commit to buying it. Gel creams are usually not a major issue for most skin types, but the effects of irritants like alcohol and fragrance are hard to predict until you really try them out for yourself.

Overall, this has been a great product and I use it every night. I love the added bonus of refreshing, cool feeling on the skin – great way to wind down and prep for a relaxed sleep ahead.

[REVIEW] LANEIGE Water Sleeping Mask

By now you probably would have heard of this ‘holy grail’ product that everyone says you must try from LANEIGE. I had read a lot of glowing (pun intended) reviews online about this, and couldn’t help but get myself one of these to test it out myself.

Product Description

Overnight mask that gives the skin a lively, well-rested appearance the next morning thanks to its Sleep-tox™ purifying effect.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 42

Ingredient List

Water, Butylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Cyclohexasiloxane, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Root Extract, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Beta-Glucan, Chenopodium Quinoa Seed Extract, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Magnesium Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Chloride, Potassium Alginate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Polysorbate 20, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Propanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Stearyl Behenate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, HYDROXYPROPYL BISPALMITAMIDE MEA, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Alcohol, 1, 2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, CI 42090

The first thing you should notice here is the alcohol ingredient, a clear warning sign for any of you out there with sensitive skin. Unfortunately, I didn’t pay much attention to this when I first purchased it, which will explain my review later.

Another ingredient here that is not so obvious is Butylene Glycol. A quick check online states that “in sensitive individuals, butylene glycol may be irritating to the skin, eyes, and or nasal passages, but it is the least potentially irritating of all the glycols”. Oh dear.

Packaging: LANEIGE’s packaging is very consistent, and I think that it is very effective in achieving two goals: 1) reinforcing the idea of hydration, 2) making the product feel luxurious. I think this is probably one of the brand’s greatest strengths tbh, I can’t find an product of theirs which I don’t like the packaging of.

Texture: The texture (and the colour) reminded me of belif’s aqua bomb (which I really love). Both have this blue tinge, spreads easily on the skin, feels moisturizing, and not in the least bit oily. I personally really like moisturizers that have this texture because I feel less paranoid about them being too oily for my already-oily skin.

Effectiveness: I’ve tried this over a few months and I’m frankly not very impressed.

Let’s start with the moisturizing effects. Although it’s not meant to be used as a moisturizer (that’s why recommended usage is 1 to 2 times a week), I love how my skin instantly feels hydrated and cooled when the mask is applied. It does help me to sleep a little better because my skin feels hydrated and refreshed.

However, I have serious doubts about whether this really makes your skin look refreshed and purified the next morning. For starters, I’ve often faced acne breakouts on my face the very next morning – not exactly the kind of effect I was going for. I can see that my clogs are blocked, and that’s why I have a breakout after using this. I’ve tried this quite a few times already, and it’s happened to me at least 80% of the time. I’m suspecting it’s the irritants like alcohol, fragrance, and possibly Butylene Glycol.

I don’t know if I’m the only one facing this problem, because all the reviews I’ve read have never mentioned a single thing about breakouts. In fact, I’ve ever read something about this product being great for oily skin – really?? Is it just me who’s facing problems with this??

Final Verdict

I tried very hard to make this product work for me, but unfortunately it seems that it’s not working out well.

I honestly don’t feel that it is very oily and never really suspected that it could clog my pores – if anything, it feels very refreshing and it made me feel like my skin could really benefit from using it. I didn’t feel any irritation, any clogging, nor any other discomfort. I’m really upset that my skin doesn’t take this well, especially when it seems to be doing wonders for many other users. I would not recommend this to people who have oily, sensitive, and acne-prone skin.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of problems/unsatisfactory results from using LANEIGE’s Sleeping Mask? Do share your experience in the comments, I would love to hear from you!
