[REVIEW] TFS Finger Cotton Tint

I’ve always been a huge fan of TFS’ makeup products, so it is little wonder that I got back to buying stuff from them again. I do think that TFS in SG gets a lot less attention than they deserve despite selling some products worth holy grail status, so do show the brand some love if you’re looking to try something new ~

  • Cotton applicator with diagonal tip allow soft and delicate lip makeup with creamy texture at first then a semi-matte finish.

Ingredient List

Again, I’m not sure why I’m unable to find the ingredient list for this product anywhere on the web, just like a few others previously 😦 Ah well.

I had such a hard time trying to pick a colour – did I want to buy something more vibrant, or a wearable shade that I could pull off everyday? In such times of doubt, I went with the easier option – buy both!

Packaging: It reminds me a lot of paint tubes, which is probably what they were going for when they designed this. I like that it’s easy to bring around and use, and is not too messy either.

Texture: Even though the shots make it look like it’s slightly glossy, it definitely dries down to a matte finish. It gets a little drying as the day progresses, but nothing too uncomfortable.

Colour payoff & intensity: The swatches in the photos were achieved with just one swipe each, which is honestly very amazing. I find the #08 Brown-presso is a lot more pigmented than #04 More Coral, which can probably be partly attributed to the fact that it’s a darker shade after all. I like to create a gradient look using these because I’m not too keen on

Colour: I’m so happy that I picked these two shades, because they are definitely complimentary to any occasion you can name. You can use #08 when you want to achieve a more mature look for an important event, and #04 for a casual day out, or even wear it to school!

Staying power: The staying power of this lipstick is pretty okay, but nothing really outstanding. I’ve had it last at least one meal and survive multiple rounds of drinking water, but what’s left is usually just small patches of colour on the lips. Do also note that it’s not transfer-proof, which is slightly disappointing 😕

Final Verdict

As usual, TFS has not disappointed with this lip product. I really like the colours available, but it would be great if they offered more MLBB/nude shades in future, as the current selection mostly comprises bright, vivid colours that not everyone may be comfortable with.

The staying power is not too bad, but again, nothing really noteworthy. It doesn’t actually promise to be long-lasting or transfer-proof, so I guess you can’t fault the brand for it. But I guess you would expect a lip tint to last longer, no?

I do think that it gets a bit too drying over time, despite being branded as a semi-matte lip product containing moisturizing oils. Maybe it’s just my lips? But the problem is not too serious, you can always prevent the problem of dried-out lips by applying lip balm before the lip tint.

This is a good product to try out if you love bright and bold colours, so do pop this in your basket the next time you visit TFS 🙂

[REVIEW] Innisfree Flower Cotton Ink

As I’ve often said, I’ve been on the hunt for my favourite Eco Flower Tint in Innisfree stores for a long, long time. So when I finally saw a lip product that resembled the tint in the 2018 Jeju Colour Picker, I knew I had to get it.

(Can I also just say that the entire collection is gorgeous? It’s inspired by pastel-coloured hydrangeas in Jeju ~ I really wanted to get the highlighter but it was out of stock 😦 Sigh.)

Product Description

For that soft, diffused just-blotted look, our medium coverage liquid lipstick dries matte, doesn’t budge, and feels soft and comfy on the lips.

Ingredient List

Purified Water, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Cyclopentasiloxane, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Octyldodecanol, Propanediol, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Silica, Ethanol, Isododecane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Titanium Dioxide, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Red Oxide of Iron, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Red 202, Propylene Carbonate, 1,2-Hexandiol, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Polyglyceryl-6 Polyricinoleate, Dimethicone, Yellow 4, PhenoxyEthanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Stevioside, Ethylhexylglycerin, Butylene Glycol, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Hydrangea Macrophylla Leaf Extract, Perfumery

The good news: no potentially-harmful chemicals/irritants!

The bad news: hydrangea macrophylla leaf extract ranks low here, there aren’t many natural ingredients used in this product 😢

Having to pick just one colour when all the colours look fantastic is indeed torture. (Un)luckily, this product comes only in five shades, so you won’t have to rack your brain so hard. Alternatively, if you’re feeling generous, you could even buy all 5 shades!

I eventually went ahead with no.5 after swatching at a physical store. It’s a beautiful pink – not too much of a bright pink, together with a tinge of coral.

Packaging: Very misleading – I got duped into thinking that it was my favourite Eco Flower Tint, all thanks to the packaging. Personal grievances aside, I thought that this product’s packaging is pretty good. it’s definitely compact enough to fit into any makeup pouch. What’s more, I love this little catch they designed in the lipstick – there’s a soft, satisfying click when you cap it back so that you know for sure you’ve capped it properly.

Usually, when I close the cap back after using my lipstick or concealer, I get a little worried that I didn’t really cap my products back properly and they will end up leaking everywhere. Thankfully this hasn’t happened to me yet, but it’s always nice to have a sort of guarantee and ease of mind, which is precisely what this

Colour: It looks like red in the swatch, but it actually applies pink on your lips. I would say it’s a coral pink?

Colour payoff & intensity: This lipstick’s colour payoff is amazing despite being marketed as ‘medium-coverage’ – just one swipe is definitely enough to coat your lips. It’s not too intense that you might end up having to blot off some lipstick – just enough to look naturally good.

Texture: It applies matte, but feels much softer and more comfortable than usual matte lipsticks. I definitely got reminded of Colourpop’s Ultra Blotted Lip and Peripera’s Airy Ink Velvet, both of which also apply matte while leaving a nice blotted, cotton-like feeling on the lips.

Taste & fragrance: The moment I applied this, I immediately thought that it tasted like a bandung rose drink. It smells and tastes like a rose, which I’m not complaining about because it’s great.

Staying power: With a bold claim that it ‘doesn’t budge’, I put it to the test on a few different days to see if it can survive long hours and multiple drinking & eating. It’s definitely capable of lasting if you’re going without food and drink for a few hours and still holds up very well even if you’re drinking.

However, it does not hold up as well after eating a meal – most of the colour is usually gone after your food is gone as well, with only a very slight tinge of colour left on the lips. It was slightly disappointing because I was honestly hoping that it wouldn’t budge, as advertised.

Final Verdict

I love the texture and colour of this lip product. Colour-wise, I don’t really have anything similar in my Peripera and Colourpop collection, so this feels like a great addition.

The staying power doesn’t bother me so much that I’ll stop using it, mainly because I really like how the product settles nicely on my lips with minimal effort on my part. With some liquid lipsticks, I always have to use a cotton bud to wipe off excess around the edges (because I’m not using a lip liner, oops), but with this Flower Cotton Ink, you don’t have to worry too much about a messy application. The staying power is also not that bad in comparison to most products I use, just that it falls short of its claims :/

Overall, I think this is one good product to try if you’re a big fan of a soft, blotted lip look. I definitely am, so you can be sure that I’ll consider buying the other shades in future.

[REVIEW] Innisfree Vivid Fruit Tint

In my attempt to find my favourite tint from Innisfree, I chanced upon this lip tint that was relatively affordable. It reminds me a little of lip tints from Etude House, but nothing really surprising about that since both brands are under the same umbrella company.

Ingredient List

WATER, GLYCERYL POLYMETHACRYLATE, GLYCERIN, PROPANEDIOL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, ALCOHOL, PENTYLENE GLYCOL, TREHALOSE, TROMETHAMINE, CARBOMER, RED 33 (CI 17200), GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE, YELLOW 6 (CI 15985), RED 27 (CI 45410), FRAGRANCE, DEHYDROACETIC ACID, YELLOW 5 (CI 19140), CITRUS GRANDIS (GRAPEFRUIT) PEEL EXTRACT, RUBUS IDAEUS (RASPBERRY) FRUIT EXTRACT, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) FRUIT EXTRACT, ACTINIDIA CHINENSIS (KIWI) FRUIT EXTRACT, PRUNUS ARMENIACA (APRICOT) KERNEL EXTRACT, CITRUS PARADISI (GRAPEFRUIT) FRUIT EXTRACT

I think it’s rather impressive that the ingredient list actually includes real fruit extracts (grapefruit, raspberry, orange, kiwi, & apricot!), although they’re ranked low on the list, meaning that there aren’t large traces of them.

In addition, I was searching the different chemicals included and found an interesting article on glycerin:

Glycerin is a compound that can be made from natural products such as vegetable oil, or can be synthesized from propylene alcohol. The result is an alcohol-based product that is an ingredient in many skin-care products. Glycerin, also called glycerol, can be used for both cosmetic purposes and as a treatment for medical conditions of the skin. Most people are very tolerant of glycerin, without experiencing irritation. The effects of glycerin on skin are a healthier, more natural-looking appearance.

They only have 2 shades available, which is a real pity. I picked Cherry, since I wasn’t quite too sure about making orange lips work for me.

Packaging: It looks very similar to Innisfree’s nail polishes, but I’m not complaining. It’s simple and clean, with a transparent bottle for you to see the colour (though I have to admit that the dark red is very misleading). It’s small and easy to carry around, which is a plus point.

Colour: Don’t be fooled by how dark red the tint colour looks like from the bottle. In reality, the colour is much closer to that seen on the applicator. I’ve forgotten to snap a swatch, but if I had to describe it, it looks very similar to the official lip swatch given by Innisfree. It’s a bright pink that’s actually very similar to that of my favourite Eco Flower Tint #2!

Colour payoff & intensity: I feel that this tint’s colour is a lot more intense than the Eco Flower Tint’s. I got a bit of a shock when I first applied it because the colour payoff was really strong and I wasn’t looking to wearing such a bold colour. Another con is that the colour application isn’t very even, and often stains my teeth more than my lips, which is really troublesome.

Staying power: I have pretty high expectations for lip tints’ staying power, because it is, after all, a tint. Even after meals and long hours, there should at least still be a visible trace of colour on the lips.

While this lip tint manages to pass the test after one meal, I find that its staying power is actually pretty limited. Although you’ll see hints of colour on the cotton pad after wiping your lips with makeup remover at the end of the day, you’ll see close to zero colour on your lips after one full day.

Final Verdict

While I appreciate the initial colour intensity, I expected a much better staying power from Innisfree’s lip tints, so frankly I was slightly disappointed with this. The uneven application was also quite a let-down.

I wouldn’t say it’s a replacement for my favourite lip tint, but it definitely has its own merits. Its best selling feature is, of course, its affordable price. I think at a price of SGD6.50, this lip tint is worth buying if this is your first foray into makeup, or if you’re a bit tight on cash at the moment but still need a nice lip tint to complete your makeup.

[REVIEW] LANEIGE Two Tone Tint Lip Bar

I previously bought the Two Tone Lip Bar, which I love the duo colours for, but had difficulty getting the ombre effect to stay. Since I still had hope that this would eventually work out for me, I bought this Two Tone Tint Lip Bar at the duty-free in Incheon Airport.

Product Description

Packaging: Similar to the Two Tone Lip Bar, this comes in a rectangular bar that is compact and convenient for bringing around. I love the lever that you have to slide in order to bring out and keep the lip bar. I personally think that it’s more convenient than having to twist a lipstick bullet. I would even say this lever reminds me of an eraser (see photo below) 😂

Texture: Slightly sticky, but very hydrating on the lips, since it’s a lip balm.

Colour payoff & intensity: I like the colour payoff as it’s not very intense and looks quite natural. The red (colour) part stains your lips sufficiently, while the lip balm itself has no colour, which creates a nice gradient lip look.

Colour: Typical me bought No.03 because it’s marketed as Lee Sung Kyung’s pick, haha (I’m a fool for such marketing tactics sometimes). Nonetheless, it’s a beautiful cherry pink that I personally really like for a lip colour, so I guess it’s a win-win situation?

If you see my product shots, there’s a slight streak of red that’s run out. It’s not a manufacturing problem, just that I’ve been using it quite often. It’s a small problem – you can see from the swatch that the lines are not as even and well-defined, but you can rectify that with a few more swipes on your lips.

Staying power: As compared to the Two Tone Lip Bar, I feel that this one stays on longer and with better colour. It’s completely understandable, considering that this is marketed as a tint.

Effectiveness: Regarding the lip balm part, LANEIGE advertises that it uses the ingredients and technology of its famous Lip Sleeping Mask in the lip balm. I haven’t actually used the lip sleeping mask before so I can’t vouch for that, but I do like how moisturizing it feels, as well as the nice, healthy shine it gives to my lips.

Final Verdict

If I had to choose between the two different lip bars, I would pick this in a heartbeat.

I feel that the lip balm part helps the colour to apply and adhere much better to the lips. The Two Tone Lip Bar doesn’t feel quite as comfortable in comparison.

I find myself using this more often than I do with the other Lip Bar (oops). I love the other shades available and would definitely consider buying them, but I feel that a lot of them look too similar. No.8 is not really my style, so I’ll probably go with no.1 the next time for something different.

I think this is a little pricey – acceptable price point because it is LANEIGE, but not really the first thing I would have gone for. I got it for cheaper because it was from the duty-free shop, but I’m honestly not sure if I will pay the original price.

My Top 10 Cosmetic Products of 2017

As 2017 is about to end, it is also time to do a round-up.

I started writing on THERAGEFFECT just this year, which was also when I actually first started playing around with makeup. I try my best to give honest and frank reviews because I’m not paid or sponsored to do any, and I hope they have been useful in your shopping decisions, or at least interesting to read 🙂 Although I generally don’t regret many of my purchases, I definitely have a few star favourites.

Here is my list of 10 products tried and loved in 2017.

Note: not ranked in any particular order

1/ Innisfree Eco Flower Tint

I’ve raved about this so many times that it’s no wonder it made my list of top 10 cosmetics in 2017. One of the best lip tints and lip products I’ve ever used, I wish this product will never disappear, and just maybeee add more shades?

2/ banila co. It Radiant Glow BB Cream

Good coverage, no oily or sticky feeling, minimal oxidation – what more can I ask for in a BB cream? I’m still on my first tube for 4 months, and I’m probably only halfway through even though I use this almost everyday. My only worry is that I tried to repurchase this in Korea recently and they changed the packaging – let’s just hope that they didn’t change the formula (for the worse) as well.

3/ banila co. Prime Primer Hydrating

If you haven’t been actively using primer, 2018 is the year you should start doing so. I used to be a naysayer until I bought one of these. Not only do they hydrate my skin and prep it for my makeup, it also helps my BB cream (see above) stay on longer. Again, my worry is that banila co. changed the designs for only 3 of the primers, so it could really mean that the formula is not the same anymore 😦

4/ shu uemura hard formula

I bought this after long deliberation (months to be exact) because it is not the cheapest eyebrow pencil out there in the market. The lead pigment only comes off when in contact with the oils secreted in eyebrows, and I find that it really helps to shape and fill my eyebrows in easily. Only downside – you have to sharpen it at the shu uemura store.

5/ Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Powder

My face becomes an oil well very easily, so I bought this for sebum control. I ended up loving this powder for its ability to keep my makeup in place for hours, in addition to its commitment to anti-sebum.

6/ Innisfree Vivid Tint Rouge

Another star lip product from Innisfree, what is most impressive isn’t just long staying power and beautiful colour payoff. From personal experience, I can apply one layer of peachy-pink on initial application, which eventually leaves behind a brighter and more intense pink tint on your lips. I’m sure you’ll love the dual colours as well.

7/ THEFACESHOP Moisture Touch Lipstick

Another high-raved about product (raved by me, at least) that definitely topped my list. In fact, I love the formula so much that I bought 3 shades of this. I also appreciate how easy it is to apply to look ready – just one swipe and you’re good to go.

8/ THEFACESHOP Inkgel Pencil Eyeliner

I’ve experimented with many different types of eyeliners over the year because I’m not great at drawing so sometimes I blame it on the pencil. I had one of my liquid eyeliners smudge completely in Korea because my eyelids were too oily, but this pencil eyeliner has held up strong with zero smudging through long bouts of bad weather – highly impressive.

9/ peripera Ink The Airy Velvet

Long lasting, soft colours and extremely affordable price are everything that makes peripera’s lip tint so famous. I was initially not very impressed with my first try of the product; now, I am a converted fan with 3 shades bought on 3 different occasions.

10/ IOPE Air Cushion

How could I leave out this cushion that changed the way I look at compacts? IOPE’s Air Cushion provides much better coverage than you could expect from a compact cushion. Together with moisture and longwear properties to stay on your skin for hours without feeling like your makeup is flaking off, this cushion is one that you’ll definitely want to keep in your makeup pouch.

[REVIEW] A’PIEU Water Light Tint

I was strongly encouraged by a few people to buy this, having been told that many Youtubers swear by its value for money. I actually saw this product in A’PIEU’s retail store in Seoul and was this close to buying it. I changed my mind at the last minute… only to buy it on Shopee a few months later (true irony indeed).

Product description

A’PIEU Water Light Tint is infused with floral and fruit extracts to keep lips moist and nourished. The tint adheres smoothly, offering lips the moistness of water and the smoothness of oil at the same time.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 6.90 (Shopee)

There was only one shade available (RD03) by the Shopee seller whom I got this from, and it was on sale for $5.90 at that time, so I just went ahead with that shade. RD03 is a MLBB colour (think ‘dried roses’) that would definitely be my first choice if it were for a matte lipstick. I think for glossier. more ‘watery’ types of lip products, I would have preferred to buy a brighter shade like PK01 or CR01.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Two things about the lip tint that instantly impressed me: 1) glossiness 2) colour intensity. Just one layer of the application is enough, and it really does look like lip gloss but without the uncomfortable stickiness – in fact, it’s pretty hydrating! It actually looks very similar to the product shot above in the product description, which is really impressive. The colour is really good, but a little too intense for my liking because of how dark it is (I prefer lighter shades because dark shades don’t go well with my complexion).

Another plus point is that this lip tint tastes really good, like grape-flavoured candy! It also smells really sweet ~

As a tint, it fares generally well with regards to staying power and is able to last through at least one meal, with hints of colour still clearly visible on the lips, although it doesn’t look as glossy as it once was at the beginning.

Final Verdict

Once you try it out, you’ll understand why this is highly recommended and so well-liked. Priced much lower than other lip tints but with the same intense colour payoff & staying power, this product is absolutely worth every single cent you pay.

This is one lip product that I’m definitely looking to repurchase in other shades. I don’t always strongly recommend products, but I confidently assure you that this is one affordable lip tint that you don’t want to miss out on.

[REVIEW] Aritaum Lip Cover Color Tint

One of the ways brands draw you in to browse cosmetics is through the wide selection of colours and products available. Aritaum is highly successful at this (of course, not only because it boasts of many other AMOREPACIFIC brands), and I became an unfortunate victim of this successful merchandising.

Product description

A long-wearing matte lip tint that offers intense color with full coverage and a matte finish even in hot weather.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: USD 8.63 (Aritaum’s official website)

I got shade #4 Red Papaya, which comes as a surprise because I’m not exactly a fan of bright orange-red shades. My explanation for this is that I didn’t have time to do a proper swatch before I bought it as I was rushing for time, so I just trusted the colour band on the white cap. When I finally got around to using it, I got a shock of my life at how bright the red colour was.

I think the applicator is a tad messy (Urban Decay’s Vice Liquid Lipstick is quite clean in comparison), so you have to be very careful when using this or you might stain your fingers and clothes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As you can see from the swatch, it’s a bright red (actually resembles chili sauce haha) that stains very well. I don’t think the colour matched my skin very well, but I was actually quite surprised by how good my lips looked in photographs after I applied this lip tint. The colour is very vibrant and really stands out, unlike my other lip products which don’t quite show up as well in photographs.

In addition, although this product is technically a tint, it actually dries matte like a liquid lipstick. It’s a comfortable matte that does not dry your lips out. What’s also commendable is its staying power – definitely capable of lasting a few hours with meals and drinks. The bright colour will, of course, look more muted over time, but there is still sufficient colour coverage.

Final Verdict

If I apply this fully on my lips, it doesn’t look quite as good on me because of my skin tones. However, a gradient lip works pretty nicely.

I’ve been rather impressed by Aritaum’s lip products so far, which is a relief because I wasn’t familiar with the brand when I made my purchases. I’m sold by the formula and colour payoff, so I’m definitely putting this on my repurchase list. I’m looking to buy #3 and #12, as I gravitate towards more peachy and pink shades. I still don’t think I’m fully capable of pulling off such a bright red as of yet, haha.

It’s a pity, however, that they don’t have brown-red shades which are very in-season these days, but maybe they will add more in future? 😇
