[REVIEW] Peri’s Cushion Lips

I was DEFINITELY not planning to buy another lip product anytime soon, but you know I am susceptible to good deals :X (don’t deny it, I’m sure you do that too). I saw this selling at SGD 12 at some Watsons fair and thought the colour was really lovely when I swatched it. Plus, it’s Peripera – their lip tints have never disappointed, so I was sure this would be great as well.

Product Description

Get bright, bold lips this summer! The formula dispenses through a soft cushion for controlled dabbing and application. Once applied, this vibrant stain does not budge!

Official Retail Price: USD 14.00 (Soko Glam)

Ingredient List

Methyl Trimethicone, Diisostearyl Malate, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Silica, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Dimethicone, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, HDI/Trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Sorbitan Olivate, Red 6 Lake(CI 15850), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Cholesteryl Isostearate, Titanium Dioxide(CI 77891), Yellow 6 Lake(CI 15985), Sorbitan Isostearate, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Ethyl Hexanediol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Red 7 lake(CI 15850:1), Fragrance, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter

I thought the texture was rather similar to the Airy Ink Velvet, so I’m putting its ingredient list here for comparison:

Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Cyclohexasiloxane, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Cyclotetrasiloxane, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Tocopheryl Acetate, Green Tea Seed Oil, Cotton Seed Oil, Mango Seed Oil, Lithol Rubine BCA, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Tetrachlorotetrabromofluorescein, Titanium Dioxide, Ferric Oxide, Phloxine B, Hydrated Ferric Oxide, Sunset Yellow FCF, Tartrazine, Black Oxide of Iron

I’m pretty surprised to see that the lists are not identical, but you also see that this Peri’s Cushion Lips is missing the various seed oils, replaced instead by a very low proportion of shea butter. I’ll talk more about the texture of the product below.

Packaging: It’s not the prettiest packaging I’ve seen from Peripera. Actually, I think it might be one of my least favourites. It’s not exactly cute, and looks a lot like my highlighters (the stationery product, not the makeup namesake LOL). It theoretically works the same as TFS’s Finger Cotton Tint, but it is a lot harder to control this. I find it very hard to squeeze the product out, and ended up squeezing more than I wanted on the first try. Definitely not my favourite packaging as well.

Colour: The actual swatch looks NOTHING like the one in the marketing photos. So disappointing. I was lucky that I got the chance to swatch this in person before I bought it, instead of ordering it online, because I would have been really upset if it turned out so different when I receive it. Someone should really call out these brands for showing swatches that are not off by a large margin.

Anyway, there were only 2 shades on sale – the other was some bright pink colour that I would probably never wear, so I went with this OR04. I find this colour to be similar to the MISSHA Matt M Lip Rouge’s Maple Latte shade, and this is quite flattering for my warm undertones. If you also have warm undertones, you would most probably like this shade as well.

The colour payoff is okay – it’s not super intense, and will probably take you a two or more layers to get a nice and even colour.

Staying power: I find it to be thicker than the Airy Ink Velvet, almost like a normal liquid lipstick. It dries down to a matte finish on the lips, but I didn’t like how it felt quite dry, and ended up showing all these tiny cracks and fine lines even though I had exfoliated my lips before applying.

I did appreciate the long-wear formula though, because it is definitely good to last for days when you can’t find the time to touch up. True to its words, the stain is hard to budge. I don’t think it’s completely transfer-proof though, so if you are looking to keep the colour as thick and bright all day long, you may be disappointed.

Final Verdict

This is just okay, I guess. I would love to wear this regularly but it really is quite dry for my already-dry lips, and I really hate seeing all these fine lines amplified.

If you are looking for long-staying lip lacquers with good colour payoff and comfort on the lips, I definitely still suggest the Airy Ink Velvet series over anything else from Peripera. It is little wonder that that is one of their star products, because some other stuff (like this product) are rather underwhelming.

[REVIEW] Chanel Le Rouge Crayon de Couleur

Chanel cosmetic products are probably highly coveted for reasons including the brand name (most affordable product you can get from a luxury brand), and of course the high quality that usually comes with luxury brand products.

I never really thought about buying Chanel’s products, but I was definitely more than happy when I received one of this.

Product Description

An easy-to-apply lipstick that delivers lasting, full-coverage colour and satiny shine in a smooth, comfortable texture. The twist-up retractable crayon offers convenient, on-the-go shading and impeccable touch-ups.

Packaging: It’s very simple and straightforward, but it really does make the product look classy and befitting of a luxury brand. It also definitely reminds me of a crayon, albeit not as chubby as how some other brands have made their lip crayons (think Mamonde and Clinique).

Colour: When I first saw the colour I was a bit hesitant – if you see the other lipstick shades I’ve bought, you know I’m a big fan of nudes, browns, and pinks. But never, NEVER, have I had lip products that were this berry/wine shade. I’ve also never tried purplish shades because I didn’t think that I could pull that off with my warm undertones.

However, I have to say that this left me pleasantly surprised. Rather than drawing a full colour on my lips, what I did instead was more of an ombre look, so that it blends better with my original lip colour. You get this effect that looks a little like you just ate blueberries, and it actually looks really good, and is suitable for anyone regardless of skin colour and undertones!

I’m also very impressed by how easy it is for an intense colour payoff to come off on skin. Some brands’ crayons need a bit (or a lot, depending on which brand) of tugging before you get a decent payoff. This, however, requires absolutely no tugging! All you need to do is gently swipe the crayon and you get a an even application.

Staying power: It makes no promises of lasting you from dawn to dusk (although it does briefly mention ‘lasting’), but I have to say that this is not too bad in terms of staying power. A safe estimate would be around 5 hours (simple drinking, no oily food), so you definitely need to touch up at least once in a day, but the crayon makes touching up really easy so it feels less of a hassle.

Final Verdict

This is a product that definitely lives up to its luxury brand name. I would absolutely buy other shades (especially Rose Claire! What a beautiful shade of pink)… if I could afford to. Haha.

Overall, this product is great for anyone who loves themselves a good Chanel, wants an effortless lipstick, and likes a fantastic colour payoff. It’s definitely one of the top favourites in my collection, but I still wouldn’t call this a must-buy. It could definitely do with a better staying power, and that is something I really prioritize when I’m evaluating lippies.  Also for a product volume that is much smaller than industry average (0.04g), I think that SGD50 is really hard to part with, even for just the brand name. But that’s just my personal opinion, maybe you might find this price point more palatable than I do.

[REVIEW] Cezanne Lasting Lip Color N

If there’s another country that does packaging just as well as Korea, it’s definitely Japan. Japanese cosmetic products are one of the prettiest, most delicate things I’ve seen, while Korean cosmetics are more on the ‘cute’ side.

I first saw Cezanne Cosmetics in Tokyu Hands a month ago and thought it looked really similar to Canmake, with the intricate packaging and sweet colours. I couldn’t believe my luck when I won a set of this brand’s products from Cleo Singapore’s FB contest, and was really excited to try this out, so you will see a few other Cezanne products’ reviews coming up as well!

Product Description

One interesting ingredient you’ll see in this list is Squalene Royal Jelly Extract. A quick check online says that this ingredient is “POSSIBLY SAFE when applied to the skin appropriately. However, it has caused inflammation and allergic rash when applied to the scalp.” (Source) So take note if you have sensitive skin!

Packaging: I think for a drugstore brand, this packaging is really great. Its gold details don’t make it look cheap, which is a really tough job if you see how some other brands have tried and failed.

Colour: I’m under the impression that the Japanese are not big fans of matte lipsticks and prefer a glossy or creamy finish, because the lipsticks from Japanese brands I’ve seen so far don’t have matte offerings.

As you can see from the swatch, the colour payoff is quite okay – but only because I applied THREE layers. It’s even less intense than K-beauty products, but I think the result is that you get a very natural and soft look (truly MLBB lol). There’s a nice sheen that makes your lips look slightly plumper, and I have to say that this shade 102 (from the ‘brown’ series) is exactly the lipstick shade I am looking for! It’s definitely a shade to create fall looks, and especially flattering for people with warm undertones.

Staying power: It’s called Lasting Lip Color, so it should last – and it does! I have had experience with lots of bullet lipsticks with this finish that cannot even last through me drinking water, but this is impressive enough to survive a meal! It fades nicely so that you don’t get ugly patches of colour, and don’t have to worry as much about touching up.

Final Verdict

This lipstick falls into my category of ‘not bad, but not something I absolutely love’. The price point is really good, the products works as it should, but not exactly ‘holy grail’ status in my opinion.

If you are looking for an affordable lipstick that isn’t dubious and gives a lovely MLBB colour, I would definitely recommend this. If you are looking for something that gives more personality or has a wow factor, you might not be as impressed by this.

[REVIEW] Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip

Having reviwed Colourpop’s blotted lip and satin lip, it’s about time I got around to reviewing another of their star lip products – matte lip.

Product Description

This thin, lightweight formula smoothly glides on the lips leaving SUPER intense pigment with a bold, ultra-matte look. It is very long-wearing and 100% kiss-proof AKA no transferring!

Official Retail Price: USD 6.50

Ingredient List

ISODODECANE, DIISOPROPYL DIMER DILINOLEATE, ALUMINA, NYLON-12, SILICA, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, POLYPROPYLSILSESQUIOXANE, DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, PROPYLENE CARBONATE, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, IRON OXIDES (CI 77492, CI 77499), RED 7 LAKE (CI 15850), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891).

There aren’t many ingredients in this list, and a quick check on most of them seem to be fine. Propylene Carbonate, however, has been classified as a human irritant for use around eyes, on skin, etc., so do take note of that.

Packaging: Identical to the other Colourpop lipsticks. I find this a little problematic because the shades I buy all look pretty similar, and sometimes I can mix them all up. I have to look very carefully at the tube to see if I’m using the blotted, matte, or satin. It’s not a huge problem, just that it would have been great if Colourpop made some slight differences to the packaging for clearer distinction.

Colour: I was kind of prepared that the colour would turn out darker than the nudes and pinks I was used to buying when I saw the marketing photos, but the colour didn’t seem to fit me as well as I had expected. I think it’s a little too much of a dark brown for me, and it made my overall complexion look quite bad. It’s a bit sad because I really quite like this ‘dusty brown pink’ (as Colourpop puts it) :/

The colour payoff is, I think, the best among blotted, satin, and matte. It’s not very surprising, considering that it’s a matte lipstick, but still a noteworthy point.

Staying power: Best staying power I’ve had from a matte lipstick. Ever. I never had to worry about transfer, or having the colour disappear after a meal. In fact, I had the most amount of colour pigments left on my lips at the end of the day when I used this lipstick, and I absolutely loved the convenience of not having to touch up! My lips also didn’t feel uncomfortable at all with this formula – no drying out, no ugly cracking of lips, none of the horrors that usually accompanies matte lipsticks.

Final Verdict

Once again, Colourpop has not disappointed with its products. This is my favourite matte formula for liquid lipsticks thus far – my only regret is that the colour didn’t suit me quite as much as I wanted. Thankfully that’s not too big of a problem – I could always buy other shades in future…

[REVIEW] Etude House Dear My Blooming Lips-Talk Rose Kiss Edition

If I had to pick a makeup product that I love the most, I would definitely choose lipstick. However, I’m actually not a super big fan of Etude House’s lip products – there are definitely other K-beauty brands that come to mind when I’m asked to recommend lipsticks to friends.

Nonetheless, I’m not one to let a single bad experience stop me from trying other products from Etude House, and honestly, how could anyone resist this beautiful collection? I chanced upon it when I went to join the crowd in Etude House’s reopening at Junction 8 – there was a whooping discount of 20% for this collection, so I knew it was literally ‘now or never’ and here I am with these products to review.

Packaging: Beautiful box aside, the packaging of the lipstick itself is quite simple – just a rectangular, block-coloured lipstick. I do like the lip detail on the lipstick itself though, it’s cute! The lipstick is also not full-sized (I think), making it smaller than the usual Blooming Talk lip products. It’s super convenient to carry around, and also helps ensure that I have a higher possibility of finishing it haha.

Colour: The colours in this collection are super comprehensive – you like nudes? Reds? Orange? A bright pink? Or darker colours for a night out? This collection definitely has you covered. I love being spoilt for choice when I want to pick a colour to use based on my mood, and my outfit for the day.

Payoff-wise, I think the cream lipsticks are definitely very impressive. You can see in the last photo that the colour is very rich and has good coverage. However, I do find that the chiffon ones are a bit lacking. The colour is not very good so I often have to take a few swipes to get a stronger colour.

Staying power: Again, there is a difference between cream and chiffon.

Surprisingly, the cream formula is really good at staying put. I’ve gone through a day without touching up and the colour still holds on. The chiffon formula is a completely  different story.  Although it’s a bit of a cross between cream and matte, it actually doesn’t stay on as much I initially expected. What makes it worse is the fact that it’s quite drying, and dries my lips out even more than a normal matte lipstick.

Final Verdict

SGD 78 divided by 12 comes up to SGD 6.50 per lipstick, which is honestly a steal. I bought this at about SGD 60+, so you can imagine how happy I was to get my hands on this.

Price aside, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Etude House’s cream lipsticks in this collection. The chiffon ones are still not quite my thing, but maybe it’s just me.

[REVIEW] MISSHA Matt M Lip Rouge

I know the matte lipstick trend is slowing dying out, what with everyone looking for glosses again, but I personally still prefer having something longer lasting because I’m always munching on something and I hate having to touch up often.

I have yet to try a lip product from MISSHA, so I thought I would give this matte lipstick of theirs a go when I was buying some other products on Shopee.

Product Description

Airy fit, matte textured lip rouge applies on softly for an even color and true matte finish. Color coating technology helps create vivid, glamorous colors on lips with a single touch. Provides UV blocking benefit to protect lips.

Ingredient List

Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Octyldodecanol, Hexyl Laurate, Titanium Oxide, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Ceresin, Polyglyceryl-2, Triisostearate, Microcrystalline Wax, Dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate/Hexastearate/Hexastearate/Hexarosinate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Diisostearyl Malate, Ozokerite, PEG-10, Dimethicone, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Leontopodium alpinum Extract , Jasmine Extract, Mango Seed butter, Shea Butter, Sundrops Flower Extract, Ricinus Communis Seed oil, Methyl Hydrogenated Rosinate, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Hydrogenated Lecithin , CI 19140, CI 45410, CI 15850:1, CI 15850, Aluminum Hydroxide, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin , Perfume, Tropolone, Silica, CI 77019

My first thought when I saw this product was that it looked a lot like my Etude House Dear My Matte Tinting Lip-Talk, so I went to have a look at its formula:

OCTYLDODECANOL, POLYMETHYLSILSESQUIOXANE, DICAPRYLYL CARBONATE, OCTYLDODECYL NEOPENTANOATE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), POLYGLYCERYL-2 DIISOSTEARATE, SILICA, MICA, SYNTHETIC WAX, PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRAISOSTEARATE, IRON OXIDES (CI 77491), MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX, POLYETHYLENE, POLYGLYCERYL-2 TRIISOSTEARATE, DIISOSTEARYL MALATE, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX, POLYHYDROXYSTEARIC ACID, RED 6 (CI 15850), DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, FRAGRANCE, RED 7 (CI 15850), METHICONE, BLUE 1 LAKE (CI 42090), COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, PUNICA GRANATUM FRUIT EXTRACT, WATER, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, RUBUS IDAEUS (RASPBERRY) FRUIT EXTRACT

What I find interesting is that they definitely share a lot of ingredients in common, but Etude House’s lipstick contains an added butylene glycol, which is an alcohol that can cause skin irritation (if you remember my other posts about it in LANEIGE products).

One fascinating thing about this lipstick is that it actually offers SPF17. While we try to protect our skin from sun damage, we tend to forget that there is skin on our lips that should be protected as well, so this was quite a nice bonus.

Packaging: Eerily enough, the packaging looks almost identical to that of Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited lippies. To be fair, the differences are quite obvious, but the design inspiration is definitely there as well. Whichever came first, I do like the simple and classy packaging that comes with no frills.

Colour: I thought the actual product colour matched the name ‘Maple Latte’ a lot better than the product shot provided by MISSHA, to be honest. It turned out to be a lot more orangey-brown that I had expected, because it just looked like pink in the official swatches. Actually, I won’t say that I dislike the colour it turned out to be because it’s actually a kind of brick-red that I got to love recently – great for people with warm undertones and are rather fair, just that when I bought this I was looking for something that could pull off a more ‘sweet’ and ‘feminine’ look. I think shades Love Dream and Dear Rose were more like what I was gunning for.

The payoff is great, and the colour slides off easily so you don’t have to tug hard on your lips for more colour. I do find that application can be a bit messy on your lips if you’re not careful because it can overrun your lip line.

Staying power: I have high expectations of mattes and I thought that this was quite okay, but nothing super mind-blowing. There aren’t any lipstick stains on my cup when I drink, but a fair bit gets off when I eat. You will still have some colour remaining by the end of a long day so you won’t have super pale lips, but a touch-up is still needed to look fresh.

Final Verdict

This is an okay lipstick – nothing in particular that I really liked, but nothing that I didn’t like about it also. I would describe it as the kind of staple in your lipstick collection that is good for an easy and predictable makeup routine.

My only minor regret about this product is that I got it in a colour that didn’t quite match my expectations. Ah well. Maybe I’ll get around to buying the pinks next time.

[REVIEW] shu uemura rouge unlimited supreme matte

I’ve always raved about shu uemura’s hard formula, which is literally the only eyebrow product I’ve been using for months. I’m also a big fan of their lip products because the colours are all so well-suited for Asian skin tones!

Product Description

  • superb matte effect thanks to carefully selected matte powders
  • ultra comfort feeling thanks to a combination of 3 active ingredients

Ingredient List

I’ve been trying but failing to find a proper ingredient list for this product, which is kind of strange because I would have thought a famous brand’s products would have made their ingredients listed more prominently across websites. Do let me know if I may have overlooked any website/information!

I had a phase where I loved pink lipsticks (okay I had to admit, that was when I first started using makeup and all I knew were red, orange, and pink lipsticks), and it explained why I bought this shade of bubblegum pink even though I’ve gravitated towards nudes and brick reds these days.

Packaging: I think this packaging is pretty unique because I haven’t quite seen it in other brands. In fact, I think there have been brands that actually try to copy this metal-bullet-in-transparent-casing concept 🤔 Regardless of who came first, I really like how classy this looks – definitely befitting of a luxury brand.

Colour: As I mentioned earlier, pinks have gradually started phasing out of my favour a little so I ended up not really being a fan of this over time. In any case, I also found out that this pink was too light for me, and also that it was better suited for people with cool undertones, while I definitely needed something more ‘warm’.

However, I am a big fan of how good the colour payoff is. Of course, you might say “it’s a matte lipstick, you should expect good payoff from mattes”. That’s not entirely true tbh, you might be surprised at how some matte lipsticks can give the faintest colour possible.

Staying power: In the same vein, you would expect mattes to be long-lasting, so I would say this shu uemura lipstick doesn’t disappoint. You can expect this to last through one or two meals, but with just some tinge of colour left by the end of the day.

What really sets this apart from the pack, however, is the comfort it promises and actually delivers. It’s ultra smooth when applied on lips, with no chalky or waxy feeling. It’s very unusual, extremely comfortable, and definitely befitting of the name ‘supreme matte’. This is the BEST matte bullet lipstick formula I have ever tried, and I love it so much that my only regret about this is that I bought it in a shade that isn’t great for me.

Final Verdict

SGD38 is not exactly something my wallet can stomach all the time (I bought this at a cheaper price during a warehouse sale), and maybe it’s not something you would find affordable for a lipstick either. But if you are willing to pay it, I assure you that this formula is absolutely worth your buck. The supreme matte range has many other shades that are flattering for most skin tones, so pick it wisely!
