[REVIEW] Etude House Matte Chic Lip Lacquer

These were quite heavily promoted last year, so I gave myself an excuse to try them out when Etude House released a Xmas bauble with 3 mini lip lacquers (because Xmas collectibles are worth our money, right?)

Product Description

Long-lasting lip locker keeps the lips matte and less smudged or smeared as rich color pigment is fixed fast upon application.

Ingredient List

I’m having problems finding this, let me know if you see it around!

Matte Chic Lip Lacquer Swatch
RD303 IRENE RED
BR402 THANK YOU BERRY BROWN
PK005 ICING CREAM PINK

Packaging: I quite like the fact that the bottle is transparent, as it is very easy to see the exact colour of the lipstick. Let’s say you are in a rush and don’t have time to swatch your lippie, you can still choose a colour that you want accurately. I find this very useful, because a lot of lipstick packaging don’t tell you much, or even if they do, they tend to be misleading.

Colour: RD303 is the exact shade of red that Irene of Red Velvet (Etude House’s ambassadors) wears in their marketing material. While I do agree that it looks fantastic on her, I generally steer clear of bright reds like this because I’m not used to wearing such loud colours.

BR402 is a lovely MLBB shade that works well for most people, although I would say it probably works a little better for people with cooler undertones. I find that this is pretty similar to Urban Decay’s Vice Liquid Lipstick in the shade Naked.

PK005 is a special shade that can only be found in the Tiny Twinkle Xmas Ornament, so you won’t be able to find the full-sized version of it in stores (I think!). The colour looks super pretty when you swatch it like that, but for some reason it turns out a little darker on my lips. Maybe it’s just me.

Colour payoff & intensity: It’s very pigmented, but as you can see from the PK005 swatch, the application can get a little uneven sometimes. I find it a bit thick as well, but I think it’s a pretty common texture that you get from matte liquid lipsticks.

Staying power: I’ve seen some truly fantastic reviews about this lippie’s staying power, so I was pretty curious to see if it would work as well for me.

I was rather pleasantly surprised by the fact that this lasted me not only through a few bouts of water-drinking, but also all the way from lunch to the end of the day. It did feel a little dry as the day progressed, but nothing too uncomfortable.

Final Verdict

I’ve yet to try the other colours, but I have to admit that I am pretty impressed by the formulation of this liquid lipstick. It lasts for really long, and yet I didn’t suffer from the horrors of dry, uneven patches on my lips.

Could this be a dupe for UD’s famous Vice Liquid Lipsticks? I think it definitely comes close – the only aspect it lacks in is the number of shades available!

[REVIEW] Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip

Having reviwed Colourpop’s blotted lip and satin lip, it’s about time I got around to reviewing another of their star lip products – matte lip.

Product Description

This thin, lightweight formula smoothly glides on the lips leaving SUPER intense pigment with a bold, ultra-matte look. It is very long-wearing and 100% kiss-proof AKA no transferring!

Official Retail Price: USD 6.50

Ingredient List

ISODODECANE, DIISOPROPYL DIMER DILINOLEATE, ALUMINA, NYLON-12, SILICA, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, POLYPROPYLSILSESQUIOXANE, DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, PROPYLENE CARBONATE, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, IRON OXIDES (CI 77492, CI 77499), RED 7 LAKE (CI 15850), TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891).

There aren’t many ingredients in this list, and a quick check on most of them seem to be fine. Propylene Carbonate, however, has been classified as a human irritant for use around eyes, on skin, etc., so do take note of that.

Packaging: Identical to the other Colourpop lipsticks. I find this a little problematic because the shades I buy all look pretty similar, and sometimes I can mix them all up. I have to look very carefully at the tube to see if I’m using the blotted, matte, or satin. It’s not a huge problem, just that it would have been great if Colourpop made some slight differences to the packaging for clearer distinction.

Colour: I was kind of prepared that the colour would turn out darker than the nudes and pinks I was used to buying when I saw the marketing photos, but the colour didn’t seem to fit me as well as I had expected. I think it’s a little too much of a dark brown for me, and it made my overall complexion look quite bad. It’s a bit sad because I really quite like this ‘dusty brown pink’ (as Colourpop puts it) :/

The colour payoff is, I think, the best among blotted, satin, and matte. It’s not very surprising, considering that it’s a matte lipstick, but still a noteworthy point.

Staying power: Best staying power I’ve had from a matte lipstick. Ever. I never had to worry about transfer, or having the colour disappear after a meal. In fact, I had the most amount of colour pigments left on my lips at the end of the day when I used this lipstick, and I absolutely loved the convenience of not having to touch up! My lips also didn’t feel uncomfortable at all with this formula – no drying out, no ugly cracking of lips, none of the horrors that usually accompanies matte lipsticks.

Final Verdict

Once again, Colourpop has not disappointed with its products. This is my favourite matte formula for liquid lipsticks thus far – my only regret is that the colour didn’t suit me quite as much as I wanted. Thankfully that’s not too big of a problem – I could always buy other shades in future…

[REVIEW] MISSHA Matt M Lip Rouge

I know the matte lipstick trend is slowing dying out, what with everyone looking for glosses again, but I personally still prefer having something longer lasting because I’m always munching on something and I hate having to touch up often.

I have yet to try a lip product from MISSHA, so I thought I would give this matte lipstick of theirs a go when I was buying some other products on Shopee.

Product Description

Airy fit, matte textured lip rouge applies on softly for an even color and true matte finish. Color coating technology helps create vivid, glamorous colors on lips with a single touch. Provides UV blocking benefit to protect lips.

Official Retail Price: USD 15.00

Ingredient List

Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Octyldodecanol, Hexyl Laurate, Titanium Oxide, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Ceresin, Polyglyceryl-2, Triisostearate, Microcrystalline Wax, Dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate/Hexastearate/Hexastearate/Hexarosinate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Diisostearyl Malate, Ozokerite, PEG-10, Dimethicone, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Leontopodium alpinum Extract , Jasmine Extract, Mango Seed butter, Shea Butter, Sundrops Flower Extract, Ricinus Communis Seed oil, Methyl Hydrogenated Rosinate, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Hydrogenated Lecithin , CI 19140, CI 45410, CI 15850:1, CI 15850, Aluminum Hydroxide, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin , Perfume, Tropolone, Silica, CI 77019

My first thought when I saw this product was that it looked a lot like my Etude House Dear My Matte Tinting Lip-Talk, so I went to have a look at its formula:

OCTYLDODECANOL, POLYMETHYLSILSESQUIOXANE, DICAPRYLYL CARBONATE, OCTYLDODECYL NEOPENTANOATE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), POLYGLYCERYL-2 DIISOSTEARATE, SILICA, MICA, SYNTHETIC WAX, PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRAISOSTEARATE, IRON OXIDES (CI 77491), MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX, POLYETHYLENE, POLYGLYCERYL-2 TRIISOSTEARATE, DIISOSTEARYL MALATE, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX, POLYHYDROXYSTEARIC ACID, RED 6 (CI 15850), DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, FRAGRANCE, RED 7 (CI 15850), METHICONE, BLUE 1 LAKE (CI 42090), COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, PUNICA GRANATUM FRUIT EXTRACT, WATER, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, RUBUS IDAEUS (RASPBERRY) FRUIT EXTRACT

What I find interesting is that they definitely share a lot of ingredients in common, but Etude House’s lipstick contains an added butylene glycol, which is an alcohol that can cause skin irritation (if you remember my other posts about it in LANEIGE products).

One fascinating thing about this lipstick is that it actually offers SPF17. While we try to protect our skin from sun damage, we tend to forget that there is skin on our lips that should be protected as well, so this was quite a nice bonus.

Packaging: Eerily enough, the packaging looks almost identical to that of Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited lippies. To be fair, the differences are quite obvious, but the design inspiration is definitely there as well. Whichever came first, I do like the simple and classy packaging that comes with no frills.

Colour: I thought the actual product colour matched the name ‘Maple Latte’ a lot better than the product shot provided by MISSHA, to be honest. It turned out to be a lot more orangey-brown that I had expected, because it just looked like pink in the official swatches. Actually, I won’t say that I dislike the colour it turned out to be because it’s actually a kind of brick-red that I got to love recently – great for people with warm undertones and are rather fair, just that when I bought this I was looking for something that could pull off a more ‘sweet’ and ‘feminine’ look. I think shades Love Dream and Dear Rose were more like what I was gunning for.

The payoff is great, and the colour slides off easily so you don’t have to tug hard on your lips for more colour. I do find that application can be a bit messy on your lips if you’re not careful because it can overrun your lip line.

Staying power: I have high expectations of mattes and I thought that this was quite okay, but nothing super mind-blowing. There aren’t any lipstick stains on my cup when I drink, but a fair bit gets off when I eat. You will still have some colour remaining by the end of a long day so you won’t have super pale lips, but a touch-up is still needed to look fresh.

Final Verdict

This is an okay lipstick – nothing in particular that I really liked, but nothing that I didn’t like about it also. I would describe it as the kind of staple in your lipstick collection that is good for an easy and predictable makeup routine.

My only minor regret about this product is that I got it in a colour that didn’t quite match my expectations. Ah well. Maybe I’ll get around to buying the pinks next time.

[REVIEW] shu uemura rouge unlimited supreme matte

I’ve always raved about shu uemura’s hard formula, which is literally the only eyebrow product I’ve been using for months. I’m also a big fan of their lip products because the colours are all so well-suited for Asian skin tones!

Ingredient List

I’ve been trying but failing to find a proper ingredient list for this product, which is kind of strange because I would have thought a famous brand’s products would have made their ingredients listed more prominently across websites. Do let me know if I may have overlooked any website/information!

I had a phase where I loved pink lipsticks (okay I had to admit, that was when I first started using makeup and all I knew were red, orange, and pink lipsticks), and it explained why I bought this shade of bubblegum pink even though I’ve gravitated towards nudes and brick reds these days.

Packaging: I think this packaging is pretty unique because I haven’t quite seen it in other brands. In fact, I think there have been brands that actually try to copy this metal-bullet-in-transparent-casing concept 🤔 Regardless of who came first, I really like how classy this looks – definitely befitting of a luxury brand.

Colour: As I mentioned earlier, pinks have gradually started phasing out of my favour a little so I ended up not really being a fan of this over time. In any case, I also found out that this pink was too light for me, and also that it was better suited for people with cool undertones, while I definitely needed something more ‘warm’.

However, I am a big fan of how good the colour payoff is. Of course, you might say “it’s a matte lipstick, you should expect good payoff from mattes”. That’s not entirely true tbh, you might be surprised at how some matte lipsticks can give the faintest colour possible.

Staying power: In the same vein, you would expect mattes to be long-lasting, so I would say this shu uemura lipstick doesn’t disappoint. You can expect this to last through one or two meals, but with just some tinge of colour left by the end of the day.

What really sets this apart from the pack, however, is the comfort it promises and actually delivers. It’s ultra smooth when applied on lips, with no chalky or waxy feeling. It’s very unusual, extremely comfortable, and definitely befitting of the name ‘supreme matte’. This is the BEST matte bullet lipstick formula I have ever tried, and I love it so much that my only regret about this is that I bought it in a shade that isn’t great for me.

Final Verdict

SGD38 is not exactly something my wallet can stomach all the time (I bought this at a cheaper price during a warehouse sale), and maybe it’s not something you would find affordable for a lipstick either. But if you are willing to pay it, I assure you that this formula is absolutely worth your buck. The supreme matte range has many other shades that are flattering for most skin tones, so pick it wisely!

[REVIEW] 3CE Mood Recipe Matte Lip Color

I’ve seen this so often on 3CE’s Instagram (you probably do, too!) that I knew I had to get this if I ever stepped foot into Stylenanda Pink Hotel again, and lo and behold, I became the proud owner of one 😂

Product Description

  • Creamy texture
  • Well pigmented

I really liked all the shades in this lippie collection – so suitable for fall, so fitting of the MLBB tag! I was wondering if I should get the one with 5 minis (which retails for 50 000 won in Korea) but instead settled on a full-sized #221.

Packaging: The surface of the packaging is smooth, and it comes in a cuboid shape, which is quite unique because most of my lip products come in a cylindrical packaging. It looks and feels quite luxurious, and does not give a cheap, plasticky feel.

Colour: Look at how gorgeous the lipstick (and the colour) is! The lipstick itself looks like a terracotta red that reminds you of autumn, but in reality, it comes off as a beautiful dried rose pink.

Colour payoff & intensity: The colour application is not as smooth and its payoff not as great as I would have expected from photographs I have seen of the Stylenanda models on Instagram, which is slightly disappointing. It takes me a few swipes to get a really nice and even colour.

Texture: I’ve heard countless horror stories from friends about how drying 3CE’s matte lipsticks are, which was probably one of the reasons I refrained from buying it even though the shades all looked so lovely.

When I finally got around to using it, I realized how unfounded all these stories were. The lipstick applied matte all right (it should anyway!), but it felt comfortable enough without me feeling like my lips were going to peel off into tiny coloured pieces (it’s happened to me before with some other matte products, unfortunately).

Staying power: When it comes to staying power, matte lipsticks usually hold up quite well, and I think the performance of this 3CE lip product is fairly ok. It lasted through one meal and a few hours after, but mostly just left with faint traces of colour, so don’t expect to still have a full lip look after a hearty meal.

Final Verdict

My only regret about this is not buying more shades when I was in Korea because I realized that I couldn’t get it from Singapore’s Sephora stores only after I got back. I’m actually really surprised that they don’t stock it in Sephora because it’s one of their best-selling items.

I love the colour, period. I know a lot of brands have been jumping onboard the MLBB/autumn lip trend recently, but I would go so far as to say that 3CE has been one of the true pioneers of this trend. The quality is not as bad as people sometimes lament, the colours are extremely gorgeous, and the only thing I would really find issue with is the colour payoff. However, I think it is a problem that can be solved by a few more applications.

3CE, please stock this in Singapore’s Sephora!!!

[REVIEW] Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick

Ever since my amazing experience with Urban Decay’s Gwen Stefani collection, I was pretty determined to get my hands on their Vice lipsticks.

Product description

This is Vice Liquid Lipstick—a waterproof formula so life-proof, it’s not going ANYWHERE until you take it off. (Just imagine the possibilities.) What makes Vice different? Our high-tech formula provides longer-lasting wear with ZERO transfer. Like our original formula, Vice Liquid Lipstick lays down intensely pigmented color. And the comfortable, nondrying wear sets it apart from other liquid lipsticks.

I was absolutely spoiled for choice at the store when I saw all the shades available. I remember being torn between Brat, Naked, Backtalk and Trivial. In the end, I chose Naked because it looked like a nice nude pink that I could pull off for everyday looks.

It actually looked a bit streaky in the bottle after a while, especially if you don’t use it often. This came as a surprise to me because I haven’t had similar problems with my other liquid lipsticks.

3605971375743_vice_liquidlipstick_naked_alt1-20170330075837-81103-km

This is how the shade is advertised on the official UD website.

It appears as a much darker shade in real life – in fact, it looks a bit like Backtalk and Rapture. On the lips, however, it becomes a nice shade of nude pink.

I had very high expectations of this product because it’s advertised as being ‘life-proof’. Imagine if your lipstick could last through the whole day without any reapplication or transfer! It’s a tough promise to keep, but I’m quite happy to say that it was about as life-proof as I needed it to be. It lasted through hours of snacking (oops) and drinking, with minimal transfer to anything else.

The one issue I have with this liquid lipstick, however, is how drying it is. It promises to be comfortable and nondrying, but it left my lips feeling totally dried out the first time I tried it. The next few times, however, I learned my lesson and applied lip balm before the liquid lipstick. It did improve the situation, so I guess that’s the trick to it.

Another thing I learned was to apply just one layer and let it dry before you decide to smack or press your lips together. This lipstick’s colour payoff is as amazing as you can imagine, especially coming from Urban Decay; just one swipe is good enough for sufficient coverage. HOWEVER, you have to let that one layer of lipstick dry!!! I cannot emphasize this enough. If you don’t let it dry properly on your lips, you’ll find that the lipstick becomes a bit sticky and streaky on your lips, and the application doesn’t look as smooth as it should be, and you’ll end up wondering why this lipstick isn’t as life-proof as it promised to be.

Final Verdict

Life-proof? Check.

Nondrying? Meh.

I think this lipstick comes with its own tradeoffs. You either have a product that you’ll seriously love for its staying power, or one that you’ll have second thoughts about using because it makes your lips feel like you haven’t drunk water in 10 days. Of course, matte lipsticks are more or less guaranteed to make your lips feel like dried prunes, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort to use lip balm for this product, even matte lipsticks can be your go-to product every day.

I would definitely recommend this for the colour intensity and the ‘life-proof’ness. It is honestly one of my favourite shades, and I’m immensely glad I picked this colour after my huge dilemma at the store. I’m a bit iffy about how it feels on my lips though, as well as the price. $30 for one liquid lipstick can feel a bit like an overkill, but for the volume of product you can get, I think it’s probably still acceptable.

[REVIEW] Memebox I’m Matte Lip Crayon

Frankly, I had never heard of Memebox before I went to Korea. I still didn’t know what it was after I returned, until today when I did a google search to write this post:

Memebox started in Seoul in 2012, bringing indie beauty and skincare brands to the Korean audience. With over 500 employees and selling 4,200 brands worldwide, Memebox is still growing every day, distributing globally in the US, Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Our flagship stores are destinations for customers to experience the products first hand, with complimentary makeup services available at all locations.

I didn’t go to their flagshop stores either so I had completely no bias nor expectations for this brand. I bought this because I saw their products on sale in Lotte Department Store. I think I paid 8000 won for this lip crayon, but honestly, I don’t quite recall. All I remembered was being angry with their salesgirl’s lousy attitude (I’ll write more on that on my Korea travel blog).

Product description

The I’m Matte Lip Crayon boasts va va voom color so your pout will always look on point. It glides on as softly as flower petals and leaves a silky matte finish. The best part is its nourishing, moisturizing recipe of Shea Butter and Jojoba and Argan oils that prevent your lips from drying and peeling unlike other mattifying lipsticks. Plus, the retractable and curved tip makes application easy and mess-free.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 11.90 (Lazada)

I bought #CY253 Blair, a nice deviation from my usual picks of nude pinks. I don’t recall why I didn’t buy Lora & Greta, which I’d be more inclined to buy based on my usual preferences. Maybe I saw red when I was angered by the salesgirl (haha) but either way, Blair was a nice terracotta red.

IMG_6875IMG_6876IMG_6878

The packaging really looks like a crayon! It feels matte, the same way the lipsticks apply matte on your lips.

IMG_7888

As you can see from the photograph above, it is a tad more red than pink, but it is a lovely colour that will be nice to wear in autumn (which is dominated by browns and dark reds).

The colour payoff is also very rich and intense – all it took was one swipe for me to get the photo above. It’s even more creamy than the Mamonde Color Balm, and feels very comfortable on the lips for a matte product. As with most matte lip products, it also promises long wear, and doesn’t dry your lips out at all.

Final Verdict

I find myself reaching for this lip crayon quite often because it’s so wearable and easy to apply, and I really want to buy all the other shades available because the colours are so gorgeous.  I regret not buying more that time, and I seriously wish Memebox would open a flagship store in Singapore as well.

I don’t always have good experiences with matte lipsticks, but this is one that I honestly want to keep repurchasing forever and pray that they will never, ever discontinue this product line.
