Ingredient List

Again, I’ve been trying but failing to find a proper ingredient list for this product, which is kind of strange because I would have thought a famous brand’s products would have made their ingredients listed more prominently across websites.

Do let me know if I may have overlooked any website/information!

The shade I got was divine wine – described as such on the SG website:

walk into any room feeling strong and self-assured. a deep burgundy red that conveys femininity and strong-willedness

Definitely sounds like the shade you want for times when you need a confidence booster!

Packaging: It’s a pen-kind of applicator that requires you to click a button at the end in order to push the stick of balm out, which I guess is kind of fun until you might get a little tired of having to keep clicking. I do like that it’s quite clean and easy to carry around though – would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a lip product that you can easily put in your pockets and touch up on the go.

Colour: I’ve never really been a ‘red-lip’ kind of girl, because I feel that wearing a red lip makes me look really fierce. However, I do like burgundy red because I feel that it looks a lot less ‘loud’ than bright red, and conveys a certain feel of maturity – great for job interviews and presentations where you want to be viewed as confident but not too arrogant.

I also have to say that this lip balm has the BEST colour payoff I have ever seen. I thought the Innisfree one was the best that I would ever have, but this honestly takes the cake. In fact, I think the colour payoff is even better than that of some lipsticks I’ve used! It’s really so hard to believe that this is just a balm. It also applies smoothly with a very even colour application.

Staying power: This is one section that I feel a bit meh about, and it’s a pity because everything else about this product is perfect. Even though it’s a ‘tint’, I feel that the staying power is not as good as I had expected. It barely lasts through a meal (not oily or anything), so you definitely have to touch up. I understand that it is probably more of a lip balm, but still, it is slightly disappointing.

Final Verdict

SGD42 is nowhere near budget-friendly for a lip product, but it is expected from a brand like shu uemura. I do think the price is quite justified when you see how good the colour payoff is, but I would have definitely given this a higher rating if the staying power was better. I’m quite particular about it because a) tints are supposed to really stain your lips for the whole day, and b) I really hate having to touch up after eating because I’m so lazy.

If you are not very particular about staying power and would love the lovely colour payoff that comes with a really comfortable balm, then I would say that this is the product for you.

[REVIEW] shu uemura rouge unlimited supreme matte

I’ve always raved about shu uemura’s hard formula, which is literally the only eyebrow product I’ve been using for months. I’m also a big fan of their lip products because the colours are all so well-suited for Asian skin tones!

Product Description

  • superb matte effect thanks to carefully selected matte powders
  • ultra comfort feeling thanks to a combination of 3 active ingredients

I had a phase where I loved pink lipsticks (okay I had to admit, that was when I first started using makeup and all I knew were red, orange, and pink lipsticks), and it explained why I bought this shade of bubblegum pink even though I’ve gravitated towards nudes and brick reds these days.

Packaging: I think this packaging is pretty unique because I haven’t quite seen it in other brands. In fact, I think there have been brands that actually try to copy this metal-bullet-in-transparent-casing concept 🤔 Regardless of who came first, I really like how classy this looks – definitely befitting of a luxury brand.

Colour: As I mentioned earlier, pinks have gradually started phasing out of my favour a little so I ended up not really being a fan of this over time. In any case, I also found out that this pink was too light for me, and also that it was better suited for people with cool undertones, while I definitely needed something more ‘warm’.

However, I am a big fan of how good the colour payoff is. Of course, you might say “it’s a matte lipstick, you should expect good payoff from mattes”. That’s not entirely true tbh, you might be surprised at how some matte lipsticks can give the faintest colour possible.

Staying power: In the same vein, you would expect mattes to be long-lasting, so I would say this shu uemura lipstick doesn’t disappoint. You can expect this to last through one or two meals, but with just some tinge of colour left by the end of the day.

What really sets this apart from the pack, however, is the comfort it promises and actually delivers. It’s ultra smooth when applied on lips, with no chalky or waxy feeling. It’s very unusual, extremely comfortable, and definitely befitting of the name ‘supreme matte’. This is the BEST matte bullet lipstick formula I have ever tried, and I love it so much that my only regret about this is that I bought it in a shade that isn’t great for me.

Final Verdict

SGD38 is not exactly something my wallet can stomach all the time (I bought this at a cheaper price during a warehouse sale), and maybe it’s not something you would find affordable for a lipstick either. But if you are willing to pay it, I assure you that this formula is absolutely worth your buck. The supreme matte range has many other shades that are flattering for most skin tones, so pick it wisely!

How Much Is Your Lipstick Worth Per Gram? [PART I]

I’ve always been curious as to whether I’m getting the most value out of my lipsticks – I can’t tell whether some are rather pricey despite the small volume, or cheap precisely because of the volume. With this in mind, I started punching numbers to find out how much my lipsticks were worth per gram.

The first part of this series focuses on my bullet lipsticks, while more on liquid ones will come later.

DISCLAIMER: Some of these numbers may not be wholly accurate due to differences in prices – I obtained these prices from either official brand websites, other retailers, or individual sellers on selling platforms. Prices are also listed in SGD (Singapore dollars).

[REVIEW] shu uemura hard formula

I contemplated really, really long before I got this. I had heard so many good reviews about this eyebrow pencil, yet I just couldn’t find it in myself to buy this because I was so used to my Etude House pencil. However, I couldn’t help myself anymore when I went for my usual 3D brow styling session and saw the brow artist using this pencil to draw, therefore I became the proud owner of this holy grail product.

Product Description

natural finish and shape. this unique eyebrow pencil only releases color pigment when it interacts with the oils in the brow hairs. the result is natural, defined brows. smudge-proof and long-lasting.

hard lead to draw precise and fine lines.

Official Retail Price in Singapore: SGD 33

I had to admit, I was sold by the fact that the pencil only releases pigment when it interacts with oils in the brow hairs. It potentially means that I wouldn’t face the danger of drawing my brows waaay too off, and helps to save pigments because I am a clumsy klutz who sometimes doesn’t cap stuff back properly, or drops things way too often.

Colour: I wasn’t too sure what colour to get (I’m not great at identifying my hair colour), so I asked the brow stylist and she got me this. Personally, I’ve often been advised to change my eyebrow pencil according to my hair colour, but it’s usually brown anyway so it doesn’t make much of a difference to me. Of course, it’s worth taking note if you find yourself changing hair colours very often, though I wouldn’t advise bleaching your eyebrows to match your bleached hair.

I know the pencil looks really worn out here, but it’s actually because I’ve been using this almost every day for MONTHS, and haven’t been back to a shu uemura outlet to sharpen my pencil yet because I’m both busy and lazy.

Despite that, you can still see how wonderfully made this pencil is. shu uemura products are especially famous for their focus on tools, and it really does feel like I’m using a well-crafted tool to shape my brows. It glides and fills in very easily to give your brows a natural look.

Staying power: I wouldn’t exactly vouch for its smudge-proof properties though. I’ve had an instance where I accidentally rubbed my forehead and voila, there was a small patch of brown on my hand where it touched my eyebrows. Of course, there’s a possibility it happened because my eyebrows were too oily, but it’s just a gentle reminder not to bank too much on it being entirely smudge-proof.

Final Verdict

I’ve been telling my friend A that this is my new favourite eyebrow product, and once again, I am impressed by a holy grail product.

The one thing that throws me off is the price. I’m waiting to see how long this pencil can last me so that I can accurately tell you if it can last me for very long, but according to the current situation, there’s a high possibility that this will actually last me for a few years, if I can get around to sharpening it right down to a short stub.

I think it’s a good investment if you want to be able to draw good eyebrows in the shortest amount of time possible. I’ve often struggled with other products because they made my brows look worse than when I started. However, I feel that this will be much better if you’re going for a natural look favoured in K-beauty, rather than a strong brow game, so make sure you get the right pencil for the right look.

My Top 10 Cosmetic Products of 2017

As 2017 is about to end, it is also time to do a round-up.

I started writing on THERAGEFFECT just this year, which was also when I actually first started playing around with makeup. I try my best to give honest and frank reviews because I’m not paid or sponsored to do any, and I hope they have been useful in your shopping decisions, or at least interesting to read 🙂 Although I generally don’t regret many of my purchases, I definitely have a few star favourites.

Here is my list of 10 products tried and loved in 2017.

Note: not ranked in any particular order

1/ Innisfree Eco Flower Tint

I’ve raved about this so many times that it’s no wonder it made my list of top 10 cosmetics in 2017. One of the best lip tints and lip products I’ve ever used, I wish this product will never disappear, and just maybeee add more shades?

2/ banila co. It Radiant Glow BB Cream

Good coverage, no oily or sticky feeling, minimal oxidation – what more can I ask for in a BB cream? I’m still on my first tube for 4 months, and I’m probably only halfway through even though I use this almost everyday. My only worry is that I tried to repurchase this in Korea recently and they changed the packaging – let’s just hope that they didn’t change the formula (for the worse) as well.

3/ banila co. Prime Primer Hydrating

If you haven’t been actively using primer, 2018 is the year you should start doing so. I used to be a naysayer until I bought one of these. Not only do they hydrate my skin and prep it for my makeup, it also helps my BB cream (see above) stay on longer. Again, my worry is that banila co. changed the designs for only 3 of the primers, so it could really mean that the formula is not the same anymore 😦

4/ shu uemura hard formula

I bought this after long deliberation (months to be exact) because it is not the cheapest eyebrow pencil out there in the market. The lead pigment only comes off when in contact with the oils secreted in eyebrows, and I find that it really helps to shape and fill my eyebrows in easily. Only downside – you have to sharpen it at the shu uemura store.

5/ Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Powder

My face becomes an oil well very easily, so I bought this for sebum control. I ended up loving this powder for its ability to keep my makeup in place for hours, in addition to its commitment to anti-sebum.

6/ Innisfree Vivid Tint Rouge

Another star lip product from Innisfree, what is most impressive isn’t just long staying power and beautiful colour payoff. From personal experience, I can apply one layer of peachy-pink on initial application, which eventually leaves behind a brighter and more intense pink tint on your lips. I’m sure you’ll love the dual colours as well.

7/ THEFACESHOP Moisture Touch Lipstick

Another high-raved about product (raved by me, at least) that definitely topped my list. In fact, I love the formula so much that I bought 3 shades of this. I also appreciate how easy it is to apply to look ready – just one swipe and you’re good to go.

8/ THEFACESHOP Inkgel Pencil Eyeliner

I’ve experimented with many different types of eyeliners over the year because I’m not great at drawing so sometimes I blame it on the pencil. I had one of my liquid eyeliners smudge completely in Korea because my eyelids were too oily, but this pencil eyeliner has held up strong with zero smudging through long bouts of bad weather – highly impressive.

9/ peripera Ink The Airy Velvet

Long lasting, soft colours and extremely affordable price are everything that makes peripera’s lip tint so famous. I was initially not very impressed with my first try of the product; now, I am a converted fan with 3 shades bought on 3 different occasions.

10/ IOPE Air Cushion

How could I leave out this cushion that changed the way I look at compacts? IOPE’s Air Cushion provides much better coverage than you could expect from a compact cushion. Together with moisture and longwear properties to stay on your skin for hours without feeling like your makeup is flaking off, this cushion is one that you’ll definitely want to keep in your makeup pouch.
